The "globe modern dictionary" describes it thusly,

Knick-knack(Nic-nac)noun
any small decorative article

Little glass dolls, cute little creatures, candle holders, potpourri containers, baubles of all sorts. Look so nice when clean and shiny all safe on a shelf. Give them time and only a bit of neglect and the dust can easily take over if they are not kept in an enclosed unit known as a "curio cabinet"...a home for the knick-knacks, within your home.

I believe the dictionary folk missed something here, I mean the part about the dust attraction, or the way these small article tend to accumulate over the years. Not getting sold at the yard sales because "oh it's just too pretty, and it was a gift" or my favorite, "it's part of a set/collection".

As lovely as they are, these are mostly just useless items, all they do is sit there - aesthetics pretty much. They do make good gifts, for the giver. They also make good yard sale items even e-bay sale items probably, especially if an outline of the virgin mary mysteriously appears on it. Some are true collectibles - for the collector, even making big dollars for a few lucky sellers. What are they worth? Only what somebody is willing to pay for them.

Oh, I suppose they dress up the house a bit, I like photos on the wall myself - maybe a picture or two of some knick-knacks. That would take up less space and collect less dust -wouldn't make too much at the yard sale though.
