War can it ever be justified?
[wasn't entirely sure what to put the catagory as]
For a debate project, I am proposing the motion that war can never be justified. I wanted to create a Xombyte on the matter too.[It will be good practice!] Any feedback will be much appreciated. BTW these aren't necessarily my own views.
In my opinion, war can never be justified. I believe that it is morally wrong to take another human being's life, whether they are innocent or guilty of any crime. I am not only opposed to war, but also to the death penalty. What gives anybody the right to take someone elses life. If you were a Christian, surely you would be going against your religion; the sixth commandment quite clearly states "Thou shalt not kill." All wars result in killing of one sort or another. The soldiers that fight in wars are usually killing completely innocent people who have commited no crime against the soldier or the soldier's country. I am sure that many of you will have seen at some point the appalling photos of Phan Thi Kim Phuc. She was nine years old, living in Viatnam in 1972(during the Viatnam war). One of the most famous photographs of the twentieth century, is one of her running from a napalm attack after all her clothes have been burnt away.
Wars can lead to despicable events. The cases of torture, abuse and homicide, found in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, are just some of numerous events that have occurred. More recently in the news, a girl (who was aged around 8), was used as a bomb to blow up a U.S. military checkpoint in Iraq. Without the U.S and British occupation of Iraq, it is likely that these people would never have felt the need to use a young girl as a bomb. Another prime example of disgusting events occurring during wars, is the atomic bombing of Japan. Hiroshima and Nagasaki both had nucleur bombs dropped on them. The vast majority of the dead were civilians. What makes the incidents in Japan even more shocking, is the fact that even now people who were not even alive at that time are suffering as a result. Without war nothing like this could ever had occured.
War is also wrong for the vast amount of money spent on it. Every year the U.S.A spends $380 billion on defense. With that money the U.S.A could single handedly end the world's health, water, sanitation and education deficits. If that money was put to better use, world poverty would be iradicated. Martin Luther King was opposed to the Viatnam war because of financial reasons, he believed that the war took money and resources that could have been spent on the war on poverty.
Wars are never accidents, it is always someone's descion. We as humans invented war, and it is our duty to make it obselete. War, like a disease, can and should be iradicated. War results in losses on both sides. In the words of Martin Luther King: "an-eye-for-an-eye leaves everyone blind."
N.B. this has not been proof read or anything, it is merely me assembling a few points together to practice. In the debate I am working for, I have to create a speech with no preparations!
I thought this was very interesting. Good read!
