In Alexander's day and culture, women were supposed to be strictly for keeping the home and bearing the children (preferably sons). Other males were for comradeship and pleasure.

Obviously these people recognized that sexual congress repeated with the same partner creates a bond, tight, loyal, and caring. If you view the female as a lesser species why would you want to form such a bond with one of them?

Thus do your duty to your family and get her with sons (as many as you can), but save your affections and virility for your buddies.

Raised in such an atmosphere it's no surprise that Alexander walked both sides of the street. What's amazing, given the circumstances, was that he appeared to find no shame in caring for his females as assiduously as for his male buddies!
