Nim's Island Review

Nim’s Island is a Children’s Movie – Period. Anyone who watches the movie from an adult viewpoint and tries to find some sequence and method in the story better stay away. Don’t expect Jodie Foster or Gerard Butler to be subtle. They play into their characters with Jodie a neurotic authoress and Gerard Butler an Indiana Jones and Robinson Crusoe type character with swagger and accent in place. But Nim played by Abigail Breslin, her playmates, her island and her adventures are what redeem the movie and make it worth a dekko,

Nim is a scientist’s daughter who has been brought up fairly independently by a microbe studying father. They move into an Island to further Dad’s research, an island which Nim makes her own. Nim makes her friends a dancing seal, a lizard and a pelican with whom she builds her own small life. She also has another life, that of books, Alex Rover books. The adventurous Alex Rover who can solve anything, do anything, is her hero.

Meanwhile circumstances lead to Nim being deserted alone on the Island and her coming together with her Hero’s creator, Alexandra (Jodie Foster). Alexandra is neurotic, over the top, lovable and pathetic all at once.

The kids are bound to enjoy the movie (at least some portions) as likely as adults are not. Worth a watch with the kids.
