The strength of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya is in its poetry. In contemporary times we judge a movie by conventional parameters like taut storyline, strong script, gripping drama, slick editing, racy narration, riveting dances, etc. That is why it is easy for anyone to miss the strengths of Saawariya.

The most important factor to understand is - Saawariya is not a movie with a story; it doesn't carry a definite structure like prose. It is sheer poetry, and with poetry, abstractness becomes all the more personified. Poems cannot be judged, more so with conventional parameters. They can only be felt. It's like seeing a rosebud bloom into a rose or watching the first rays of the winter sun bathing the surrounding with golden light in all its glory. How can you judge this with conventional parameters?

And judging poetry as prose is a gross mistake. And this is exactly what happened with Saawariya. Reviewers or the so-called connoisseurs simply missed the poetic nature of Saawariya, which is the pivotal point on which the entire movie has been based.

Unfortunately, the visual-poem is over-shadowed partly due to lack of understanding art and partly due to unwarranted comparison with Om Shanti Om, which is an altogether different movie.

Anyone who goes to watch Saawariya expecting a great story is in for disappointment. Perhaps the right way to watch Saawariya would be to keep an open mind and watch the movie in context of its real strength - its Poetry. One has to watch Saawariya differently. Not like you watch any other Bollywood movie. Then the movie gives you a feel of the musicals as a poem sung and expressed through the medium of flamboyant sets and paintings. Then you can feel yourself mingle into a world of absolute bliss when an emotional Sonam runs through the dark alleys of the magical kingdom with bluish-green pebble lights flashing around the corners.
