They kept themselves in the game up to that point with a trio of half-centuries from Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell and a sensible fourth-wicket stand of 46 between Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood. If the rains hold off in the Third and final Test, Sri Lanka will probably walk away as series champions.
