Web Search - Google Has Already Gone Semantic

A few days ago there was a news item about Yahoo planning to go semantic in it's web search. So instead of looking for the specific words in the search, the search engine actually decides what the user wants and serves up the result. That means that the search result can be made much more specific to pull up exactly the data that someone is seeking.

For example someone puts up two words namely, cat and dog in the search bar, a search engine based on semantics will automatically pull up certain criteria which till now only the human mind could conjure, like both are animals and household pets.

Google has been already using the semantics in serving up the ads for the Google Adsense program. I didn't notice it till the time I wrote this last article. When I saw the kind of ads google was serving, I was surprised, since the article does not use any keywords associated with the ads appearing and also I did not put any tags concerning the displayed ads. That can mean only one thing. Google search decided, after scanning the article that the article is about psychological problems and served ads for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder etc. Isn't that neat?

You can read the article I am talking about at the link below and see for yourself what I am talking about.

At times the bidders run out

Adsense ads follow a bidding process and it's entirely online. There are times when the bidders with 'your keywords' run out of the daily budget (which they have specified to Adwords)Google stops displaying their ads as soon as that happens. But Google has to keep displaying something and the other bidders whose ads may be unrelated come into the picture. Then it is also about arbitrage, wherein people buy adwords for small amounts and then take the reader to a a page with costlier ads and then hope like hell that the reader clicks on these high paying ads. This is one of the reason you may get non-contextual ads on the page.

The Reason for the Difference between Your Keywords and Goog's

AdSense takes its keywords from the 'body' of the page, not regarding 'head'-tags and headers and titles etc. so heavily as you might think.Disagree? Join to Defend Your Honor!

I rehd in BtoB Magazine that they were adding a tweak that, rather than taking you directly to a page you specifically asked for (the 'I feel lucky'-button, I think), they took you to a 'you might also like'-page along with the specific one ... giving Goog. more space for paid-ads.Disagree? Win some, Lose Some

Google (read the Internet)is helping me making informed choices. I'd rather be scrolling through targeted and relevant ads rather than be flooded with irrelevant and utterly useless ads the TV and print media keeps throwing at me. Information, knowledge and freedom to choose is good and if one gets influenced by something, then i think he/she always wanted it. As for Google taking over my life, like i said, i am already living someone else's life, or did you not read http://www.xomba.com/i_must_be_living_someone_elses_life

Just to play the I'm a paranoid conspiracy theorist card...

What if Google is logging every search you ever perform, and every email you ever send or receive? And not only targets you to try to influence your future spending habits, but also uses it to influence your life style choices, job choices, food choices, etc. Not just helping advertisers compete for your (soon to be worthless) dollars. But subtly taking over your whole life? if the text is green this post is clean. FreeCracker4Jack Did you enjoy what you read? Would you like to earn money writing similar articles? nice find taprial and ur living someone else's life is also kewl...i thought that the unrelated ads are google's inefficiency - or to be more correct the limitations of the google search engine! i guess going semantics, together with throwing up good related material can also bring some highly unrelated ads...they seem to be overflowing in my posts! will post an example when i find one! Interesting.....

This semantic thing is interesting. Never knew about it. Trust Google to be at the forefront of everything.

Google

Google has always been pretty good at targeting ads to keywords, but this new concept of trying to determine what a user is looking for by analyzing the keywords is taking it to the next level. Hopefully the ad delivery will be more targeted showing ads of greater interest to the reader.
