We're Zombies, Riding the Merry-Go-Round of Life

I’ve come to realize in my short Christian walk (12 years) that when I’m consistently self-centered and absorbed in my problems and issues, that life doesn’t seem abundant, good, or miraculous.
But as soon as I resolve to pray through, to take another step, to let today be different then yesterday, that my perspective begins to change. God is working and moving, and speaking; I just allowed the noise of the world and my life to drown out His still small voice.
I feel like our culture numbs us to reality. What we think is real and solid pales in comparison to the spiritual life. It seems like this world is made to distract us; to absorb our time, energy, and thoughts. We run “to and fro” grasping for the wind as Ecclesiastes so eloquently puts it. We trade our time for money, then we come home and waste brain cells on “reality” tv or “connecting” with people on Facebook or Myspace. Before we know it, it’s time for bed and then we wake up and the merry-go-round starts again.
We are zombies, controlled by the system. Unable to free ourselves from the machine. We’ve become a medicated, do nothing society. If you can’t sleep, take a pill. If you are depressed, take a pill. If you can’t get aroused, take a pill? What?? Is anyone lucid out there? Has anyone unplugged and got quiet and listened? The Word of God says that He speaks with a still small voice. We’ve forgotten how to hear it. Quiet makes us “feel weird.” Noise and images bombard us nonstop all day long. We can’t sleep. When we sleep, we dream of images and noise. When we wake up, we feel like we haven’t slept.
Who’s in control? Could there be a “force” out there that wants to keep us sedated? Could there be “something” out there that benefits from people doing nothing? Is what we perceive as reality, really real? How real is the spiritual world? Just stop and ask a few questions. Learn how to be quiet. Really pray. See what the Lord does. You may come to realize that God is always doing something and He’s just waiting for us to wake up and join Him in what He’s doing.
