What do all the computer and internet extensions mean?

Ever thought why some files have certain extension? To some it may just seem as a unique annotation to give a file a kind of surname. Some may think that it is just random attachment to abbreviate the file's content. This may be true, but in a distributed context they mean a bit more than an abbreviation. Some are shortened words that have a specific set of rules that govern its entity.
