It means being prepared for what life brings by taking responsiblity through planning, learning, and preparing.

Often when people think about a survivalist, envisioned is someone who stock piles food and weapons to prepare for the end of the world. But a true survivalist does not prepare for the end of the world, instead a true survivalist prepares for the future of the unknown.

If one believes that the world is going to end, then death would be certain. Perhaps time would be best spent preparing spiritually for the afterlife.

Instead a survivalist tries to live the most meaningful life, and prepares for the possibilities of the future. This often comes through being as self sufficient as possible, and being responsible for one's own self and family, protection, health, and sustenance.

Common thought is to be a survivalist; one must live in the country on many acres of ranch or farmland. Although this may be ideal, there are other aspects of survivalism to consider: Many of which are financial. Being able to buy a plot of land in the country and still have a job that pays well is limiting by both population and by industry. This website is being designed for those that choose to live in the suburban range or close to the cities. As most advise when it comes to the cities on survival website is mostly “get out”.

Informative

Thanks for writing this article. I wish my family and I could afford to buy enough land to farm... I was raised on a farm and we made every thing from cheese, soap to growing all of our vegetables and butchering our meat. We even had most of our own fruit. 1++++

Start Somewhere

I understand your desire to buy a farm. But that should be a long term goal (to be accomplished as quickly as possible) if possible. However not everyone will be able to do this, so I've written other articles about what to do if you can not go out and buy a farm. Read "Where to start prepping..." for a very very simple start.

Wouldn't know what to do

Guess I'm one of those who has never lived on a farm and would not know how to survive if given a plot of land. Information is always good.

Surive in the city

There are ways to survive in the suburban areas of the cities as well. Not everyone must jump to a farm.

Surviving

My dad has insisted that I learn to survive, be independent, be prepared... all of this has been instilled since I was about 8 or 9 years old. In the financial world, dad insisted that I own my own credit cards and bank accounts as soon as I was able to qualify for them. He wants me to have my own job and not be dependent on anyone for my well being. Kinda' a stretch from your post but I wanted to share.
