What Happens When Private Citizens Carry Hand Guns.
What Happens When Private Citizens Carry Hand Guns.
A lot has been written and cussed and discussed about whether citizens should be allowed to carry concealed hand guns. Today I saw what happens when private citizens carry hand guns.
As for me, I have always been for the proposition that we should be allowed to defend ourselves. I firmly believe that when guns are outlawed, only the outlaws will have guns. But today I saw what really happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.
In the state of Texas there are several ways a citizen can carry a gun. One is to become a certified peace officer. Another is to become a certified security guard. And of course, a citizen can always get a permit issued by the State of Texas to carry a hand gun. Today I saw what happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.
Hand gun permits in Texas are not just handed out like drivers licenses. There are certain rules and qualifications to be met. One is that the licensee be proficient in the use of the firearm he/she is permitted to carry. Another rule (dumb if you ask me, but no one asked me) is that you must not be delinquent in any money owed to the government such as taxes, student loans, parking tickets, etc. And you must be of good moral character. Today I saw what really happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.
The day started out just like any other ho-hum day. My wife and I worked for a little while and then decided to have a late breakfast. We made our way to a Jack-In-The-Box where we thought we could get a really fast breakfast and return to work. It never even occurred to us that we were about to get a lesson in what really happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.
We pulled into the drive way and found a parking slot right in front of the door. Just as we pulled into the parking lot another car followed us in. It was occupied by what is affectionately known as a little old lady.
You know the type. Big car, big George Burns type eye glasses, sliver hair, just tall enough to see through the steering wheel. In the 1970’s these ladies were referred to as “little old ladies in white tennis shoes”. She too was about to experience first hand what happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.
This lady exited her car, put her purse on her shoulder, and walked to the door. My wife and I were still in the car deciding what to order. As the lady approached the door a big man came up behind her and pushed her into the door real hard. Then he tried to grab her purse. Another man was, at the same time, coming out of the building.
The lady was trying to hold on to her purse while the mugger kept saying “let it go”. Finally, the mugger said “let go or I’m gonna shoot your fucking ass!”.
The man coming out of the building heard this and low and behold he reached under his t-shirt and pulled out a 9mm glock! He pointed it at the mugger and yelled “get on the ground!! I’ll shoot - I’m gonna shoot - get on the ground!”
As the mugger lay on the parking lot, the Samaritan held the gun in one hand while he called 911 on his cell phone with the other. People were running and hiding everywhere.
Within a few seconds the parking lot was full of police. Motorcycle police running a speed trap were only a block away. The mugger was arrested and the lady was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She had a heart condition which the mugger, through his actions, aggravated.
I hope this lady is ok. I watched for this to appear on the 6:00 o’clock news but it did not. So I waited for it on the 10:00 o’clock news but not there either. I guess it does not matter that it was not reported on the news. What does matter is that I now know what happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns.

Mixed Reactions...
"what happens when private citizens are allowed to carry hand guns."
Hmm.... This is a topic that evokes mixed reactions in me. Every coin has two sides. I still feel dangerous weapons should not be allowed so freely to anyone! How do you know WHO is "responsible" and who isn't?
This was probably one stray incident where the gun was used by a private citizen "positively". More often than not we have only had numerous news reports of gun shootings for no rhyme or reason in schools where many innocent lives were lost! This trend is now catching up in Indian schools as well!
Your article is a great thought provoker though! :-)
Interesting
it just occurs to me that the situation would have been a lot less dangerous if private citizens were not allowed to carry guns on the street. The mugger wouldnt have a gun neither would the samaritan. It might have ended up in a fist fight.
On the other hand the mugger might have had a knife or something that might be equally deadly. I think the fact that people see the need to carry guns on the street is a sign that something is seriously wrong with that society. I'm from Norway we have gun entusiasts and tons of guns used for hunting in private homes military rifles are allowed for military personel in private homes,we see little or no gun crime. the situation your describing is almost unthinkable even in the worst areas of Oslo. what baffles me about the gun laws in the US is that private citizens are allowed to own military assualt rifles and the likes. These are designed for one purpose and one purpose only, to kill or harm other human beings. Sure one has the right to defend ones property but at what price? Is property more valuable than life or preserving the public safety in a country?
You don't need guns!
Why should you need guns on the street?
to kill someone???
Criminals will always find a way to get guns
Martin123 - if the United States banned guns, then only criminals have guns. Where would they come from? The same place our drugs come from, south of the United States border. You see, the logic of gun laws only applies to law-abiding citizens. Criminals don't buy their guns over the counter nor would they suddenly turn in their weapons if there was a law. Criminals get their weapons the old fashioned way - illegally. Just an FYI, since Texas and Florida allowed conceal carry permits more than a decade ago, violent crime has gone down. Do a search on the Internet and you'll see the studies.
I'm not suggesting to ban
guns altogether, I just can't see why a private household should be allowed to own an army assault rifle or a machine gun. I understand criminals don't buy guns over the counter, and that allowing citizens to carry concealed guns is a way to send a message to criminals but i think there must be some underlying factors present for a society to produce violent crimes invoving guns at the rate seen in the US. We have crime in Norway and the rest of europe too but the gun crime is a lot lower and the police here are not allowed to carry guns on regular duty. We still have a lot of guns but they are certainly not used to defend ourselves against criminals even though criminals sometimes do carry guns the treshold for using them seem to be a lot higher. What do you think makes US so different from the rest of the world when it comes to gun crime?
