What has Christmas become?

It’s that time of the year, carols being sung, jingle bells ringing, and people overflowing with holiday cheer. That is how it is supposed to be, but it seems more so that each passing year reveals less and less holiday cheer. It is amazing the pressure that is put on people especially when it comes to shopping for gifts for family and friends. The other day when I braved to go to the shopping mall I overheard a young boy of about 8 years old or so say in a demanding tone to his mother “I better be getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas or I am going to hate you and dad forever!” And the mother responded back “Don’t worry you’ll get that and all the games we can afford to get you with it.” I literally wanted to smack that kid myself and then smack the mother for allowing herself to be walked all over by her child. I couldn’t believe my ears, but then again that is the kind of brain washing the media and retailers are pushing on us consumers.

Plus all the hype about “black Friday”, stores are in heated competition to see who can open the earliest and promise the lowest prices and best deals on the “hottest” items for the season. When I heard about an employee of a Walmart in Long Island being trampled to death by shoppers bum rushing the store so they could be the first one to grab the limited great deals I was overwhelmed with disgust. Are you kidding me?? 200 people in a chaotic frenzy to get in the store first had killed a person and injured several more, not to mention they ripped the front doors off their hinges! Who should be responsible for that disregard for humanity? It just amazes me to read about a savage act like that and for people to continue their shopping, what is wrong with people these days?? It seems like there was no remorse after that melee took place as people continued stepping on the officers trying to administer CPR to the deceased.

Is this what Christmas has come to? It is the birthday of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, it is sad to see that fact is being exchanged for the idea of how much money retailers can make during this season off the propaganda that the more gifts you buy for your kids and relatives the more you love them. I grew up in a family where money was tight as probably the same for most people and I was taught about being thankful for family and for what you already have. If I did get a few gifts they were cherished and taken care of to the best of my ability. These days kids go through toys like water and expect them to be replaced or they accuse their parents of not loving them. I say the responsibility should lie with the parents to instill better values in their children but with all of the calamity going on in the world it is clear that most are not. This year and quite possibly in the future I will be doing all of my Christmas shopping in the comfort of my own home on the internet far far away from the madness we call the shopping mall. Also come Christmas morning I will be in worship to my lord as it is because of him we can experience these treasures in life.

Something I Consistently Remind Myself in Buddhist Meditation

No matter how highly I 'esteem the Gohonzon above the mortally-bound workings of the world' (Nam ... the Gohonzon being an icon adorned with the symbols of The Mystic Law---call it 'the Cross'), no matter how clearly I hear 'the Immortal, Divine sound' (Myo-), no matter how zealously 'I obey the Divine commands' (-ho ... following the commands by basically 'offering the best service I am able to offer');

All my actions are going to be just as effective as any uninspired evildoer's actions. I might make them more powerful by convincing others to do things my way as well, but the only way I will do that is by doing them myself and prospering in my way!

Celebrating a Pagan Christmas here

I AGREE with jdubhub. The tree, the sparkle, the man in his red robes, robins, Yule logs, are all still to be completely Christianised. We stuff our faces and indulge in drunkeness in the time old Pagan way - praise the Lord I'll have another bowl of Christmas pudding. The Church did a pretty good job - from Constantine onwards - getting rid of the evidence and building churches on pagan sites - but still these things linger. The most amusing in my opinion is the expression men use "I've got the horn" - totally pagan leftover. There's a place in England, Leicester I think, where men still dance wearing deer's antlers.

Um, Christmas is and has been a pagan sun festival

Jesus was NOT born on December 25th. The Holy Roman Church sought to "convert" pagans who worshiped Saturn in the feast of Saturnalia on December 25, so it was decreed that Jesus was born on December 25th and that the pagans and Christians were worshiping the "same" God. (Not unlike Easter, who is a Welsh pagan goddess of fertility, symbolized by a bunny and the very symbols of new life, eggs.) If you want to say that the "tradition" of Western countries has been to worship and honor the birth of Jesus this time of year, you'll get no argument from me. However, to say that "Jesus is the reason for the season" is to ignore centuries of history, many of which predate Christianity. JOIN XOMBA IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD!

What has this world come to????

What has this world come to???? It just makes me sick to hear about this! Especially the poor individual who got trampled to death at Walmart. Christmas is about remember and honoring the birth of our LORD Jesus Christ not who gets the best preasent. It is also about being thankful for what we have and who we have in our lives. Cheerish you family and friends. You never know what is going to happen in the future.
