What is a Nuclear "Bunker-Buster" and What are the Hidden Dangers of its use?

Part 4 of a multipart series "I Hope to God I am Wrong" by jdubhub

In my previous articles, I have recounted the story that six AGM-129 Advanced Cruise Missiles complete with W-80 nuclear warheads were moved from Minot AFB to Barksdale AFB via B-52, under mysterious and highly suspicious circumstances.

The Bush Administration, as part of its sabre-rattling, has threatened to destroy Iran's nuclear infrastructure, oil-producing facilities, navy and air force, as well as its economic infrastructure if Iran failed to meet arbitrary criteria for disclosure of its nuclear weapons production. Not one known for patience, plans are already being made to bomb Iran for 48-72 hours to destroy what I described above.

As part of the bombing campaign, Bush has the option to use nuclear "bunker-busting" missiles already in the Air Force inventory. What are these missiles and what hidden dangers lurk for the civilian population of Iran and the rest of the Middle East?

The Union of Concerned Scientists, a group that started out as a collaboration bewteen students and faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 and has since increased to over 200,000 members, has put together an animation showing the potential fallout from just one low-yield "bunker buster" used at the Iranian nuclear facilities at Katanz.

As we can see by the video animation, not just Iran will feel the effect of the fallout. No, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India will have their citizens have anywhere from radiation poisoning and death (in Iran) to increased cancer risk (in Pakistan and India), depending on the type of soil penetrated and prevailing winds. That's just from one weapon! Bush's plan is to use many of these weapons.

What is perhaps most disturbing (aside from the nuclear cowboy mentality of Bush and Cheney) is the fact that these weapons are worthless against the very types of bunkers they will be used against in Iran. Let me repeat that. These weapons are useless against the very bunkers they will be used against in Iran.

Administration’s Nuclear Saber Rattling on Iran Threatens Global Security

So, we have a president who has shown a total sociopathic tendency to use the most horrendous weapons known to man against innocent civilian populations and without considering the long-term consequences. Make no mistake. If Bush uses these ineffective weapons in Iran, people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India will also die. This is to say nothing of the devastating effect the fallout will have with respect to our earth's fragile ecosystem.

Some scientists believe that a Nuclear Winter may kill more people than a Nuclear War. One big difference between the Cold War, when the US and Soviet Union aimed their nukes at military targets in wilderness and suburban areas and kept casualties and structure damage relatively low, and current low-yield weapons, is current warplans involve striking urban centers, producing much higher casualties. With the higher amounts of dust, debris, and smoke from the massive firestorms caused by the strikes, the atmosphere will be choked and the Sun will be blocked out. Even a very few detonations will have a lasting, negative effect.
