Botulinum toxin type A -- Botox -- is injected in small doses into certain muscles, usually in the face. Botox blocks the chemical signals that cause muscles to contract.

When the muscles cannot tighten, the skin flattens and appears smoother and less wrinkled. Most people inject Botox in their facial frown lines between the eyebrows and across the forehead, and of course, on the crow's fee at the corner of their eyes.

Results typically last about 3 to 4 months. In order to maintain results, repeat injections are needed.
