What is it about Dr. House?
posted May 17, 2008 - 2:25amI was watching the TV show, House, today, and it got me thinking. What is it about this show that draws us in? It's a very popular show, so there has to be something about it that keeps the audience coming back for more.
Dr. House is a certifiable jerk, but I love to watch him work! Why is that? What is it about his meanly apathetic nature that makes me want to watch him over and over again?
And, it dawned on me. I think we want to watch him so much, because he says the things we wish we could. We all grew up with the golden rule, and the idea that we had to be good and kind and filled with happiness and light. We generally even feel guilty if we don't fit the mold of sunshine and rainbows flowing through us at every turn.
Dr. House speaks to our darker side. The side that wants so desperately to tell people when we just don't care about something they have to say. The side that wants to be apathetic to the way others view us. Because, the fact of the matter is, we do care about what people think of us. We do care if others view us as a good person or not. We care about it so much, that we rarely tell others if or when we just couldn't care less.
Maybe it's a really good thing that we care about that, and we aren't all clones of Dr. House. But, for that one hour, it feels really good to see someone saying and doing the things part of us wishes we could do in real life!
