What kind of learner are you?

What kind of learner are you?

Every learner has a different learning style. It is important that trainers and educators understand not only their learner’s learning styles, but they must know their own. David Kolb taught us that there are four distinct learning styles in his experiential learning theory model. This model is based on a four stage learning system that learners may and usually progress through.

There are four stages that are:
Concrete Experience Learners (CE) (FEELING)
This type of Learner prefers an experience-based approach to learning. They rely heavily on their own feelings and personal judgments. Personal involvement drives these learners. This type of learner prefers to watch a demonstration and then imitate the behavior. This learner prefers to watch a Trainer operate a fire hose nozzle, and then mimic what he observed.
Active Experimentation Learners (AE) (DOING)
Active Learners prefer to learn by getting involved with the subject and taking an active step-by-step approach. They learn best through group discussions, structured exercises and problem solving. This type of learner would prefer to be given a fire hose nozzle and be allowed to try all the different modes of operation.
Reflective Observation Learners (RO) (WATCHING)
This type of Learner likes to observe and reflect (make comparisons and contrasts) before drawing conclusions. They learn best from lectures, films and reading. They like to play an impartial role and watch the behavior of others. Given a fire hose nozzle, a Reflective Learner will first watch the operation, then reflect on and analyze what he saw, then try to operate it.
Abstract Conceptualization Learners (AC) (THINKING)
This type of Learner prefers a theory-based, analytical approach to learning. Abstract Learners learn best from lectures, reading, case studies and solitary thinking. They prefer to read about the principles of operation of the fire hose nozzle, perhaps read a case study about its use, and then operate the nozzle.
Concrete Experience (feeling) and Abstract Conceptualization (thinking) are considered the perception continuum, or how we think about things. Learners that use these learning styles focus on how we think about things. Reflective Observation (watching) and Active Experimentation (doing) are considered the processing continuum, or how we do things. These learners focus on how we do things when learning.

In Practice
To be empathetic to your Learners, first identify your preferred learning style. Then analyze your delivery methods and adjust where needed to ensure you are changing between delivery styles to appeal to Learners who prefer styles other than your favorite. Always be conscience of your own learning style, it is natural for trainers to present material using their own learning style. It is what they are most comfortable with. The best trainers use delivery methods that include a mixture of all the four learning styles.
