What is a Tsunami

Tsunamis have killed thousands of people. It is considered a very devastating effect of nature and is very hard to predict. One however can be a aware of its signs so as to prepare.

What are Tsunamis?

Tsunamis are waves that are often caused by an undersea earthquake. The Tsunami rushes along at up to 970kilometer per hour building into a wall of water 30 meters high as it approaches land.

Tsunamis are most common in earthquake zones, particularly around Japan. The tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 was caused by a magnitude 9.1 earhtquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. More than 250,000 people died as the wave engulfed the low lying coastal regions of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and even eastern Africa.

Another destructive wave is called a storm surge, in which giant waves are whipped up by storm.

It is very important to know the locations of these tsunami prone areas and be aware of the signs of an impending tsunami. By knowing these, thousands of lives could be saved.
