What Is Your Purpose?

What Is Your Purpose?

What is our purpose? Why should I care? I have often pondered these issues and after having been alive for almost a quarter of a Century I feel that I am able to supply a reasonable argument for both. However, there are an almost infinite number of possibilities to answer these questions. The way we approach every decision we make, each task within a day, all of the goals we set both short and long term, and establish our purpose has a lot to do with how we are raised; under what circumstances we come to view the world; and what we decide we want to do while we’re here.
Dr. Parker posed the question “did you know that most people just live, with no reason for living?” I think that this supposition is accurate, but is a fault of the human race. While I was growing up my parents stressed doing good things for others and that in return our self gets enhanced, our character becomes robust, and our chance to be helped in time of need becomes more likely. It is from these characteristics that my idea of purpose was shaped.
It is my belief that we are here to create happiness in others and that as a result a feeling of fullness and personal satisfaction is created within. One of the most fundamental structures of all religion basically says that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. It is imperative that we each feel a sense of belonging with our immediate communities: our home, our town, our schools, our state, our country, etc. A prolific cycle is born when everyone has a feeling of belonging; there is a higher likelihood that we will spend our time reaching out because we feel that others deserve our time and effort.
We live in a time where each tick of a clock sounds more like the clinking of money than the knocking of opportunity to lend a hand at our neighbors’ door. This frame of mind is dangerous because it isolates people and detracts from my idea of the purpose. My own life has been blessed with many chances to become aware of how other people live their lives; I’ve been volunteering within my communities as far back as I can remember. As a result of my own proactive lifestyle I realize just how lucky I am to be part of the ever-expanding world – even if many people are unaware of what I do!
Every day presents endless possibilities for each of us to interact with others. We are given a plethora of opportunities to care and it is with excessive ignorance that some choose not to participate in changing their world – even if it’s just a little bit. If we embrace the chances and move forward we promote the cycle and hopefully continue the spread of happiness and value. It’s a shame to show up to class with no intention of learning, so why be present in life with no hopes of interacting, learning, and sharing? Without reason, what is there?
