What's Barking up the wrong tree mean

Barking up the wrong tree
“Barking up the wrong tree“ is a traditional English idiom, however, it is not easy for layman to understand its true meaning. So what is the meaning of this idiom?

I have looked it up in an English dictionary, and it says: when you are trying to achieve something, when you or your friends say you are barking up the wrong tree, then you are making a mistake or false assumption.

Is it easy for you to understand its meaning? If this is not clear enough, well, let me explain it much more clearly. Usually, bark is used to describe dog. When people say you are barking up the wrong tree, that’s mean that you should bark up to some other people rather than the people you barked up.

Generally speaking, when people say you are barking up the wrong tree, which means that you are making a mistake. If so, you should realize that what you are doing, and you should stop to do it rather than go on.
