What's Wrong With You People?!

What's Wrong With You People?!

Has Xomba become too boring for you? I hate to say this, but it's been pretty uneventful visiting this site for the past week or so. I remember the days not too long ago when people were writing interesting stories almost non-stop. Now most of the articles are news reports seemingly copied right from its source, video clips, or some half-assed attempt to express some ridiculous opinion that amounts to about one small, poorly written paragraph. What happened to the quality, creativity, and passion here?

Now I know some writers are still doing what they do best, and it helps me get through some boring days, but mostly it's junk. And what happened to the comments? The "Recent comments" section used to be measured in minutes. Most of the time, you wouldn't see a comment posted more than 30 minutes ago. With all of the new members here you'd think the comments would increase. WRONG! When I came back last week I saw a few comments that said "2 days, 14 hours ago" and "2 days, 3 hours ago." Are you kidding me?

Look, I know we can be busy sometimes, but if you're going to read an article and you think it was good, leave a comment that says, "Good article." It's really not that hard. I know I take the time to do it, and I take the time to respond to my comments. Don't be so scared to offer an opinion. If it evolves into a week long argument, so be it. That's what makes this place interesting and that's what keeps people here and clicking your dumb little ads.

So come on people! Look alive!

Along with the 'this might be a copy'-message, you might include the warning that whoever is posting is Naming All Xombees 'Accessories to the Post.' ... sort of a "do unto your brethren as you would have done unto you"-reminder. And (speaking from an out-of-body pov) I 'report' posts that I would not do unto me. (e.g. If my pay depended on others paying to see the media I output, I wouldn't tell people whom I want to pay me to see it for free.) The Gospel according to Nick

Be Good with your Good Idea, and Your Ship Will Come In ... 'fuller of treasure' than the ships the scumbag-pirates (as most pirates--the non-famous ones--were not scumbags) capture and -pillage. Get Traffic to Your Sites by Sending Traffic to the Other Sites You Like!... or ... Join Xomba!

I know what you mean...

In addition to the aforetomentioned "Download/Watch Pirated Movies on Your PC"-type -blurbs and -bytes, there is no shortage of MANY versions of the same movie or TV show by different people trying to cash in on the popularity of the medium (or they don't check to see what has already been posted) or sometimes they are posted to drive AdSense earning without even having a working link. Maybe the multiple posting can be resolved by an intermediate screen that has the user confirm that something has not been posted yet, like they do over at Digg. I admit I am in the middle of the learning curve here, so I have been posting in different subject areas and testing different titles to see what works; I am guilty of doing some of the movie/TV-type posts in the past, but they are not my primary focus and I have pretty much abandoned those posts.

You are too kind

The good news is most people on the internet starting websites aren't scumbags. Myspace, Youtube, Facebook... these sites were done by kids who had awesome ideas.

Nick Is Too Generous

I read Nick's comment and ask myself, "Why doesn't Nick have a couple million dollars?" Funny thing about asking myself questions: someone's always there to answer ... "Because Nick isn't some self-serving corporate-@$$wipe. He's a man with a great idea ... actually, a conglomeration of great ideas, left open-ended so that he might attach more great ideas once he figures out how to delegate more responsibility." Community Is Tough without Implied Family

Aren't I your friend, AngelSkates? Or is that some other angel? you divine beings confuse me with your cookie-cutter wonderment. When you join Xomba, you don't feel like you're part of something. (It's up to each and every Xombee to 'be friends with everybody,' but you don't feel like a responsible part ... if your gear-teeth broke off, none of the other wheels would notice. What you're talking about is something I also noticed in SecondLife. You can sign in for free, but it seems that you have to buy land/credit/employment before you can play. I thought they would provide players with an instant history and let you get a job while living at your parents' house. From there it would be easier to find your place in society. Here, it's unclear whether we are sons- and daughters-of Nick, hired servants of Nick, and exactly what the hierarchy is from there. As far as I can see, we're all 'cousins' here---without parents ... sort of 'a choir at the orphanage,' paying lip-service to the High Holy Nick in hopes of 'getting into Heaven' (or 'receiving worth-credits [known as "cash"] ... six in one, half-dozen in the other). Good point

I'm glad you like Xomba and I appreciate your help flagging junk. I understand you feelings about community. We are doing something very soon that will hopefully further foster that kind of environment. I would encourage users to tell their friends and spread the word. Unfortunately, things would be easier if I had say a couple of million dollars.

Is There A Xomba Community Yet?

I joined this community a couple of weeks ago and have posted a wide variety of bytes, blurbs and comments. I have been truly surprised, not only at the lack of response in the form of ad clicks, but in the lack of comments and community spirit. I have gotten very few comments to my articles from other writers and have sent out buddy invitations that have never been answered. I have received no buddy invitations. From reading articles and comments there seem to be a few persons who tit for tat each other, but little feeling of community. Most overtures of "let me give you some friendly advice" are thinly veiled solicitations for recruitment into some program or another requiring payment. As I was told by one writer when I pm'd about the free website that was offered, but which did not seem to be free," the website is free, the monthly maintainance is $19.99". lol Although I am new to Xomba, I am not a neophyte to writing on the internet. I have written for various sites since early 1999. Xomba is unique and wonderful in many ways. It is also the least hospitable and welcoming community I have encountered. I try to keep in mind that Xomba is young, very young and still finding its path in the internet wilderness. The membership is small and diverse. But the membership will grow and Xomba will forge ahead and break trail hopefully till it is a thriving, warm and welcoming community of prosperous writers. Angel-

Plagiarism

We currently suspend any user who is caught plagiarizing. This happens behind the scenes, but trust me we do battle it. It is not an easy battle especially with so many new members. I encourage all of you to report to us anyone who is plagiarizing. We do have a new site look coming. It will harness the power of the rating system and the featured writer section.

OR

Or maybe just start writing your bytes in your blurbs. Two blurbs, i had posted two days back, are still on top of the recent blurbs list.
