According to "DNA Tests Reveal Dogs' Mixed-Breed Mystery" by Sharon Peters in USA Today via The Arizona Republic, you can now tell the top 5 or 6 breeds from the 134 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club that make up your mutt that you just got from the pound!
Why would you want to know besides curiousity? Which killed the cat, you know!
DNA testing can give owners possible explanations for behaviors that might be inheritied. Other owners might want to know whether their dog has a high proportion of a breed predisposed to a particular ailment or frailty, although experts say it's impossible to know which tratis a mongrel might inherit from any particular breed.
You can get genetic blood tests from your vet that range from $135 to $170. Some websites are now offering DNA canine breed testing. Most DNA tests show 3 or 4 breeds, and some 5 to 6, but some are so dissipated over the generations, and are such weak traces that they hardly count. If the breeds cannot be determined be sure the website offers your money back. It's easier to get your money back if you use a credit card, because you can dispute services not rendered with your credit card company.
But mostly owners just want to know why their dog looks like they do!
Interesting post. I love my mutts. Who cares what breeds they are? I'm sure some people will rush out to get these tests done. You can usually tell, for the most part, anyway.
