When In Doubt, Make it a Xomblurb

With the rapidly growing popularity of Xomba and the influx of writers, many of whom are new to writing articles, it may be useful for some of us who have been doing it for a while to offer some advice. Please read this article with the idea that all of us were new at this at one time, too.

When it comes time to write an article and you are staring at that blank screen, you may feel overwhelmed by the idea that you have to string together 150 words (that's the Xombyte minimum now) on some topic and optimize it for AdSense so people will find it in the search engines, read it, and hopefully click a relevant ad to generate revenue in your Google AdSense account.

There is always the lingering temptation, particularly in the beginning, to find an article that someone has already written, maybe change a couple of words and the title, and submit it as your own original work as a Xombyte. Let me be the second to say: bad idea. If you look at the official Xomba Posting Policy, Rule 25 explicitly states:

Quote:
25. Users must only post work that they have written themselves this not only includes plagiarism, but also incorporates any work NOT written by the user. This includes partial copying of another's work or from websites like Wikipedia.org.

Ignorance of that rule in particular is no excuse because you have to check a box when you sign up indicating that you understand Rule 25 specifically.

Even if you think you changed enough of the content to sneak it in, it is not difficult for someone to Google your article content and find where it has been posted before.

There are lots of well-written articles on the Internet, including those written and featured here on Xomba. If you really like something you found and want to tell everyone about it, the better course action is to write it as a Xomblurb, which is a social bookmark, and include a link to where it can be found. (You just can't write a Xomblurb for anything written on Xomba already.) You even have a text box where you can tell the reader why you believe it is worth reading. If someone happens to click one of the ads in your Xomblurb, you still get the same 50/50 AdSense split with Xomba as if you wrote it yourself as a Xombyte.

The rules on Xomba are pretty liberal for writing and the administrator, Nick, and moderator, Jeremy, are very helpful with any questions you may have. As a writer here, speaking for myself, I would like to see you stick around a while. I enjoy the writing but what makes Xomba special is this is a true writing community where you can interact with and receive feedback from other writers in pretty much every time zone in the world. All from the comfort of your computer. What can be better than that?

My advice to you, as a fellow writer, is this:
"When in doubt, make it a Xomblurb."

Love Spain except for the animal exploitation

e.g., bull fights, blood fiestas, galgo hanging--but it's been getting more enlightened lately and I have great hopes for animal rights there. When I was younger I used to think that I'd end up in Spain when I got close to retirement age, but as it turned out, I've chosen Northern New Mexico, which is quite similar in culture, spirit, and even climate (although, alas, no coastline). One of the few advantages of Franco's reign was that Spain was rather isolated and hence a lot cheaper back in the 60s. I've noticed that now that Spain has joined the rest of Europe, the cost of living has gotten sky high.

We "Bears" Prefer to Be Called 'Dutch Uncles' @jdubhub-vegh.-ath

I use the title 'Uncle' because a) I AM one (Wish Savannah a Happy 3rd b-day! :-D) and because b) the word-history of Uncle positions it as a sound that indicates 'one's non-father, adult-male relative' ("Aunt" indicating a 'non-mother adult-nanny'). 'Dutch' Uncles are the ones who don't try to make you happy so much they try to make you feel bad about being wrong (sort of a non-bandaid healing-process). I don't usually 'go Dutch,' but---"if you've got the money, honey ..." (And "religion" and "politics" are highly-moneyed subjects with highly-viral cross-topics). ---Joining Xomba FREE Helps Writers A LOT, but Google signs the checks for our writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Happy Bounties~

I Hope They Rename "Articles" 'Conversations' @jdubhub-simpLeLi.

I try to 'respond within' two 'conversations' for every 'conversation' I start! That, and I respond to just-about all the conversations I'm automatically subscribed-to and any that have interesting titles while I'm checking my subscribed conversations. I hope I am providing a worthy example to follow (though a little extra money seems to be the best way to prove it). ---Joining Xomba FREE Helps Writers A LOT, but Google signs the checks for our writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Happy Bounties~

Xomblurbs: Good for Portfolio, but ... @jdubhub-rawnak

... if you're a drama-queen (I wouldn't say *I* am; but, if the crown fits ... lol), Xomblurbs won't get you the 'spotlight-time' that Xombytes WOULD have if SE-spiders were a little more understanding :-P ---Joining Xomba FREE Helps Writers A LOT, but Google signs the checks for our writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Happy Bounties~

Madrid!

Hi Veghead, I have only been to Madrid a couple of times. Mainly to the airport in honesty! We live in the South of Spain, Estepona, I love Spain so much, I love the food and the lifestyle and it's such a welcome break after the crazy UK lifestyle...

Hi jdubhub

I know you aren't uncivilized in the states!!! LOL I have a friend who lives in Pennsylvania and she'd never heard of balsamic vinegar, honestly... or malt although she did have it on her fish and chips when she visited London! I do hope you don't think I was being facetious! Alethea

Do you know La Reina Victoria (street) in Madrid, alethea?

I used to live right off that street, way, way back in 1968-9 as a student, when Franco and his charming Guardia Civil were still running things. How Spain has changed since then!
