When To Plant A Fall Garden In Texas
posted August 26, 2008 - 10:03pmFall is the best time to plant many kinds of vegetables in Texas. Because many vegetables like broccoli cannot bear the intense heat of the summer fall may be the only time you can grow them with success. While spring and summer are the best times for tomatoes, okra, corn,
squash, and watermelons, fall is the best time for cabbage, onions, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips and more.
The "blue leafed" vegetables such as broccoli can be planted in mid to late September. You may plant kale, turnips, beets and other leafy crops in early October and have time for them to mature before the very hard freezes arrive.
You can also plant peas and beans in late August to early September and have time for them to bear.
Fall is also the time to plant your shrubs and trees to give them a chance to rest and lie dormant for optimal spring growth.
Plant fruit and shade trees in late fall.
Some have success in South Central and South Texas with fall tomatoes although if you are starting from seed you may not get a crop before it freezes. Plant starter plants at least eight inches to a foot high.

Fall Gardens
Your garden seasons are pretty much the same as mine here in central Alabama. I'm always dismayed that most gardeners around here don't grow fall crops. After the tomatoes and corn and okra are gone they just stop planting. People here also tend to plant their broccoli, greens and onions in the spring instead of autumn. I just shake my head when I see people growing cabbages in May and June.
