Mouth to mouth resuscitation is different from Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. However, people oftentimes relate mouth to mouth resuscitation with CPR.

The truth of the matter, mouth to mouth resuscitation is only part of the whole CPR procedure. You can perform mouth to mouth without performing CPR.

Mouth to mouth resuscitation can also be called artificial respiration or rescue breathing.

Upon assesment, when a person is found to have no breathing, you can perform mouth to mouth resuscitation. When checking for the pulse and the pulse is present, you only need to perfom rescue breathing or mouth to mouth.

Performing mouth to mouth:

For adult victims perform mouth to mouth at a rate of 1 blow for every 5-6 seconds. This means that you will be providing 10-12 breaths in a minute time. Make sure that you provide breaths at a second each per blow and insure that the chest will rise as you blow.

For children and infants, provide 1 blow for every 3-5 seconds. This is a little bit faster rate considering that children and infants have faster respiratory rates as compared to adults.By using this ratio, you will be providing 12-20 breaths in a minute. Blows are given at 1 second each. Only use the air from your mouth as you blow on the infants. Giving to much pressure as you blow on the infant may cause damage.

Thing to remember:

Remember that as you provide rescue breathing, the pulse may become absent later on. Thus, it is important to check the pulse every 2 minutes as you provide mouth to mouth resuscitation or rescue breathing.

If possible, use a barrier device as you perform mouth to mouth resuscitation. Barrier devices such as a pocket mask or face shield are good for protection againts diseases.
