Where have the good actors gone and when will movies hold ones interest
I have not gone to a movie in over a year. Why? Boring, computer generated and actors ab-libing their lines. The actors of today cannot be compared to the actors of "yesteryear". Susan Hayward, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford actors that were skillfully primed. Studios that craved for a good story line. Studios that looked out for the actors and provided them with movies that not only would generate money but would have longevity. Autumn Leaves, I Want To Live, What Happened to Baby Jane? Classic movies that are still in circulation. Movies that left something to ones imagination. Skillfully crafted scenes that at times used a body double and not a blue or green screen where an actor is talking to blank wall. Then at a later time an actor is pieced into that scene or moving scenery is added. And for this they are paid several millions for the film. The actors that are long gone should have been as much if not more. Remakes of televison shows are also added to this, due to lack of creativity and imagination. The studios must now re-do a television show and turn it into a movie. The thought does bring out the artist in me, I could try out for "That Girl", oh sorry, "That Boy".
By-gone eras are just that by gone. While I do share your appreciation of "Film Classics" there were just as many duds from back then (Rear Window is my favorite all time movie). And I beg to differ about the television thing - many a Roy Rogers and other Westerns had both radio and television shows. Not to menetion the "serials" which were mostly comic book stuff. Also, as is today, many films were made from popular books i.e. Gone with the Wind, Maltese Falcon, Wizard of Oz, and your What Happened to Baby Jane?. How hard is it do that - the characters and plot lines are already established much the same as a television series. Look at the Indiana Jones series - no CGI - Speilberg refuses to go digital. To love old movies is fine. To say they are better than today's is an opinion and gross generalizations should never be used
