Where's my economic stimulus?
posted January 25, 2009 - 11:40pmAnother day, another bank....wait, no, make that country (Iceland) crunched beneath the boots of the crappy world economy. And here we sit, all the "little guys," wondering when we'll quit having to take the punches for the people who should have known better.
Bad news begets more bad news. In fact, the only good economic news that I heard in the last few months was when some Senator proposed returning FICA and federal taxes to taxpayers for two months. Where did that proposal go? Into the ether.
Quite honestly, the thing that bothers me the most about the econ stimulus, bank bailouts, auto bailouts, etc., is that the little guy is getting stepped on. Not only are we paying for this bailout as taxpayers but we aren't seeing any benefit from it. Most of us don't have the benefit of someone helping us out of financial crisis. When is someone going to look into that?
Who's gonna help us with our mortgages? Why not be practical and help people refinance to stay in their homes. Novel concept, that. Makes sense. Nope. Mortgage companies have now made it so hard to refinance and rather expensive too. You need a whopping high credit score AND an act of God to refinance. Sure helps the little guy. Thank you mortgage companies for making all of us pay for your bad decisions in providing loans to people who shouldn't have been approved anyway. Way to go with the one, two, punch...
I've watched my retirement cut by a third, my kids college fund dwindle, and I'm supposed to sit here and twiddle my thumbs. Gotcha. I can do that. Wait, that's what I am doing with little choice otherwise.
Investments being what they are...you can either pull the whole lot or pray they rebound. I don't think any of us are asking for a miracle but rather a more reasoned approach to economic stimulus that doesn't only stimulate the biggest corporations in this country. The American people are the nuts and bolts of this economy. We are the spenders. The gurus need to begin the rebuilding from the bottom of the ladder.
I sit here in the medical crisis of my life and wonder if, despite my "good" health insurance, I'll be able to pay all my copays. What takes precedence in times like this, the electric bill or the meds? Oh yea, let me also thank the state of Maryland and Martin O'Malley (governor) for not finding some way to regulate utilities to make this all more affordable for everyone living in the state. Those rising energy prices from last summer? We're still paying the same prices. At the grocery too. Nothing has come down at all. Grocery costs went up and stayed up.
Don't throw a bone to the little guy. Lord knows, starting from the ground up makes no sense at all.
