Which Fictional Character Would I Be? The Doctor.

What fictional hero would I be? Well there’s only one choice.

The doctor.

I mean come on, what can’t this guy do? You’ve got all sorts of science fiction heroes who can explore space. Phht. Loosers. The Doctor can travel to any point in the universe almost instantly- as well as any point in time. The TARDIS has survived everything from supernovas to missile attacks, and still works (bar one defective chameleon circuit). Did I mention it’s supposed to take 12 time lords to fly one of these things, and he can do it all by himself?

The doctor speaks over 9 billion languages, has an in depth knowledge of… well, everything, is charismatic and can think his way around/out of any problem that’s thrown in front of him. Who needs a big gun and muscles like small mountains when your smarts have saved and destroyed entire races, as well as prevented the destruction of the whole of the universe on many occasions? Plus you’ve got a sonic screwdriver that can operate almost any machinery.

Plus the doctor gets the chicks. All he does is turn up, find one and offer to take her away in his time ship (usually after saving her world and/or family) and bam. She stays with him for ages. Okay, he picked up Catharine Tate, but I think we can overlook that when you’ve got the likes of Martha Jones watching your back:

Not a bad pull for a 900 year old huh?

Plus he’s got that whole mysterious past thing going on; the last of the time lords, the blood of entire worlds on his hands, the blood of close friends too. There has been as much murder and death in the doctor’s time as joy and life. And not all of it was the fault of his enemies. And what’s with the title? The doctor… what’s his real name? Apparently he has told at least one person… but we may never know.

Plus he can cheat death at least 12 times, possibly more. When he dies he simply regenerates. This is something like reincarnation, his body and mind go through some changes, sometimes he goes a little nuts for a time, but he is still the doctor.

And it’s a good thing he can regenerate too. The doctor’s enemies are as a varied and deadly as they numerous. From the warmongering Sontarans to the genocidal Daleks to the legions of lesser foes he’s thwarted, it’s safe to say that the doctor has his work cut out for him trying to keep one planet safe, let alone the entirety of space and time.

Which doctor would I want to be though? Tough call. The two latest doctors (Played by Christopher Eccelston and David Tennant) where both fantastic, but I think Peter Davidson’s doctor will always hold a special place for me. I think I’d want to be my own doctor, to put a new spin on things.

The doctor has a rich history and back story that’s been steadily by the BBC’s best writers for around 40 years now. There are very few heroes who have as high quality material behind them as the doctor. Plus, there are hundreds of spin offs from comics to flash animations and novels. His world, and the doctor himself have taken on a life in their own right.

Related to this is my final point on why the doctor is a hero anyone would want to be. He’s a hero in a universe that has no want for them. Make no mistake; the doctor’s world is a very dark place. It’s written so to; people die, and sometimes there is no happy ending. Even on utopian planets and great civilizations, a dark, rotten underside lurks. He’s a single point of light in an otherwise dark and vile world. And he never gives up his crusade, despite the fact that it may seem totally futile. He walks a dangerous path between light and dark himself. One compromise of his morals, one false move and he could become that darkness he’s fought for so long to keep at bay. And maybe, he’s already slipped up.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go and save the space station Cerberus 12 from a Cyberman attack, and then I’ve got a hot date back in Ancient Rome. Ciao.

“DO.NOT.INTERRUPT.”
“You seem to be forgetting something, I’m the doctor and if there’s one thing I can do it’s talk. I know over nine billion languages and you have no way of stopping me, so if anyone’s going to shut up IT’S YOU!”
*Cue the Dalek, an alien killing machine that’s scorched worlds- Backing off.*

I was going to be the Doctor! Dang it! Very well written analysis, though. Obviously, I agree. The only reason that I would not want to be the Doctor is that it does seem very, very low when it's low. He is (supposedly) the last of the time lords, after all, and he could live pretty much forever (I'm sure he could find a way to keep regenerating after twelve. He's the Doctor!). No matter how many companions he has, he is still alone, and that seems like a very large con for all the pros.
