Who Says Octopuses Don't Have Eight Legs?
posted August 14, 2008 - 12:51amI did not know octopuses have "strong personalities" or that a happy octopus “is one that’s always entertained” and I definitely did not know the “Giant Pacific Octopus which is largest species in the world has the ability to move sections of the Rubik’s Cube”
I just read a really good article that says the octopus does not live up to its name. Researchers are holding the position octopuses have arms.
The research conducted by 16 Life center aquariums across Europe in Britain, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Ireland and the Netherlands studied their Giant Pacific, Common and Lesser Octopuses in coordinated tests.
New research of the octopus says that the two limbs in front are used as arms and the two limbs behind the first two are used as a backup set of arms for extra exploration if need be. The four remaining limbs would be mainly used for propulsion. Excellent for sneaking up on live prey.
They can use all limbs the same way but the preference is to use the front two limbs for the main exploration with two arms behind that as back up. Some octopuses favor left and right arms just like humans.
The researchers said there is no reason to change the octopus’s name. Even though the octopus is named after the ancient Greek for eight footed.
Want to read the article? It is a good read.
