Why do babies cry? - I am sure this is a question whose answer all parents must have yearned for the most. Crying babies can quickly unnerve new parents. This effect
of unnerving is more acute and immediate if the performer also happens to be the first baby.
Crying is absolutely normal for a baby. Babies cannot do anything by themselves and depend on others for their needs. Also they cannot talk. At least not in the language we understand. The only form of communication that a baby knows is crying. He has to cry and tell. Crying therefore serves a very important function of communication for the baby. Here are some possible agendas the little Einstein must be trying to communicate or convey:
- I am hungry and need food. This is the most common reason.
- I need to get comfortable. Any change in environment that affects baby's comfort can cause crying. Soiled nappy, getting wet or even tight clothes.
- I am tired, stressed out and need to be comforted.
- I do not know, but something is not right. This refers to colic baby, where baby cries for no apparent reason.
One of the first things that a parent must remember while trying to soothe a crying baby is to remain calm. Otherwise you risk doing things pretty sloppily and ineffectively during your moments of anxiety. Also you may pass on anxiety to the baby. Here is what you can do to soothe a crying baby. Some things may work some may not:
- Snug the baby and cuddle it holding near to your heart almost so that baby can feel your heartbeat.
- Rock a bye baby. Rhythmic and gentle rocking can comfort the baby. Car drive can also soothe the baby.
- Light massage to back or tummy can relieve possible wind.
- Light background music or change in environment can help.
- Change of parent or comforter. This also works for some unknown reason.
- If all else fails. Just hold and be. The parent need not feel guilty and punish themselves. Taking deep breaths or even leaving the scene after handing the baby over can help too.
Well, even if one of these tips help soothe a crying baby it can feel so blissful!

It may come as a surprise, but baby cries are of different types and have their own meanings.

Swaddling
- Is the baby in danger or duress?
- Is the diaper wet or soiled?
- Is the baby hungry?
- Does the baby just want to be held?
Before my son, I had never held a baby or changed a diaper, much less cared for a baby full-time, so I made sure that I read every babycare book I could get my hands on and made calls to my wife at work and sometimes my mother-in-law for advice. My son is going to be 3 next month, so I've got lots of hard-won experience with him. LOL Should we have another child, I will not be so green going in. But, definitely swaddling is an effective way of calming a baby. Click here if you have something to say and want to get paid to say it!CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!
