Why Can't We Cure Cancer?

Why Can't We Cure Cancer?

I am a bit frustrated today. With Senator Ted Kennedy recently diagnosed with glioma, a malignant brain tumor, the topic of cancer has returned to the forefront of the broadcast news programs.

The information reported nightly is all grim statistics; most common cancer types, survival rate, death rate, ratio of adults with cancer compared to children with cancer, what socio-economic influences cause cancer, etc.

Where is the breaking news that cancer is cured? Once in awhile, we get a "promising break through" in oncology but that seems rare.

My Aunt is fighting colon cancer, my other Aunt passed away from cancer, my mom had ovarian cancer, my sister had a cancerous growth in her throat...the personal list goes on. I'm sorry, this is too many good people with bad luck.

If you are considering a career in the field of medicine, please consider cancer research. We need fresh approaches to this devastating illness. Ironically, I have a feeling that the cure is right under our noses but we keep missing it!

I'm too old now to start over but if I could, I would consider this profession. To all of you in oncology, you are my personal heroes!!

I thought it somewhat important to stick this info in here, although it will not aid Ted Kennedy, it, certainly could aid others with a brain tumor.

There's a device, already in use, here in the United States. In some places in the U.S., its been in-place for awhile.

Here, in Oregon, there are only two of them, and, both, are being deployed in research. The device is called the Gamma Knife.

It has the ability to remove certain types of brain tumors with a success rate of 81%!!!

It is worth checking into if you know of someone who may have a cancerous brain tumor....

I've never heard of the gamma knife but I hope it becomes more than a promising breakthough for cancer victims. Thanks for the update, Bigpink!
