Why Can't We Cure Cancer?
posted May 21, 2008 - 8:39pmI am a bit frustrated today. With Senator Ted Kennedy recently diagnosed with glioma, a malignant brain tumor, the topic of cancer has returned to the forefront of the broadcast news programs.
The information reported nightly is all grim statistics; most common cancer types, survival rate, death rate, ratio of adults with cancer compared to children with cancer, what socio-economic influences cause cancer, etc.
Where is the breaking news that cancer is cured? Once in awhile, we get a "promising break through" in oncology but that seems rare.
My Aunt is fighting colon cancer, my other Aunt passed away from cancer, my mom had ovarian cancer, my sister had a cancerous growth in her throat...the personal list goes on. I'm sorry, this is too many good people with bad luck.
If you are considering a career in the field of medicine, please consider cancer research. We need fresh approaches to this devastating illness. Ironically, I have a feeling that the cure is right under our noses but we keep missing it!
I'm too old now to start over but if I could, I would consider this profession. To all of you in oncology, you are my personal heroes!!
