Why Does Wal Mart Meat Smell Funny When You Cook It?

Has anyone else out there noticed that the "Steakhouse" brand of meat from Wal Mart has a funny smell and odd taste?
I'm not sure how to describe the strange smell and taste that some Wal Mart meat has but it is vaguely like some kind of chemical cleaner and rancid butter.
Many years ago, when local Wal Mart's actually had in-store butchers the beef was better, and more locally sourced.
When the "threat" of union labor came along, instead of letting Wal Mart butchers be union members they chose to cut all meats in a large remote processing plant and ship it to the stores so it would not have to hire butchers.
This led to the meat being sourced from the same place for a large number of Wal Mart stores across a huge region.
One possible cause of the odd smelling beef from Wal Mart has been reported by some to be the use of ethanol by-products to feed cattle.
Large ethanol processing plants produce a huge volume of soured grain that has gone through the process of making alcohol which involves grinding, fermenting, leaving the grain sitting in huge tanks for days, removing it, heating and other steps to make it into feed. The use of this grain is controversial since it can cause health problems in cattle including the scours or diarrhea and being more prone to passing on virulent strains of e-coli bacteria.

Something that smells this foul can't be good for you.
This is one possible cause of the strange smelling Wal Mart meat. Has anyone else noticed it? Leave your comment below. If you have bought meat at Wal Mart that has a strange smell complain to your local Wal Mart manager. If enough people do then perhaps they will start sourcing higher quality meat.

Guess

I have to go hunt for a local grocery store that is cheaper than Walmart.

I prefer HEB

I might grab some sodas and a big bag of frozen chicken wings to cook up for a football game at WalMart, but I prefer the produce and meats at HEB, especially the freshmarket stores. Just because they went against having union meatcutters is no excuse. They are just trying to get the cheapest meat they can. Publix is a non-union supermarket and 1. They have good quality and 2. Their employees are happy.

Well

I guess it all depends on where you are and what's available. Honestly, Wal Mart isn't all that much cheaper than where I shop -- if at all.

Lucky You

Some of us are not as fortunate. Walmart is all I can afford.

I'm not really surprised

Makes me glad I don't buy any meat products at Wal Mart. I generally go to the local grocer for most of my food stuffs. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator
