Why Houston Might Not Be As Green As It Could Be

Why Houston Might Not Be As Green As It Could Be

I, myself, live in Houston. I put at least half of my trash in the recycling bin. It's so easy! Most of trash, after all, is recyclable - all the shredded stuff from the credit card offers, all of the plastic juice containers, all of the metal cans... So why aren't more of my fellow Houstonians recycling?
Don't they know that the more recyclable material the trash service receives the less need there will be for landfills? Don't they know that recycling can reduce our need and dependency on petroleum products? I find it so easy to recycle that I have a hard time understanding those who don't.
Then again, I've come across some flaws with the Houston trash service, and here they are:

First of all, why aren't the people living in apartments getting this service? Do you realize how many people live in apartments around here? I am willing to bet that more people live in apartments than live in single family structures. You haven't even begun to tap into even fifty percent of the recyclable resources in our city!

Secondly, if over 50% of my trash can go into the recycling bin, why are we given a container just big enough to hold a month's worth of diapers? The only time I am able to fully recycle a whole week's worth of trash is when I am able to find a bigger container to put inside the measely container I was provided. Either give us bigger containers, or pick up the recyclables more often!

Actually, picking up the recyclables more often would probably be the best bet. Maybe that's why a lot of people don't bother putting out their recyclables in the first place. It's hard to remember to put them out there when it's only done once a week. If we always got the opportunity to put out our recyclables when the trash was picked up then it would become more of a good habit. You're already coming by to pick up recyclables that aren't there. What would it hurt to come by more often, after a MAJOR ANOUNCEMENT, for recyclables.

I'm also wondering how much research our trash service has put into more succesful ventures in other cities...
