Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

It's a pretty safe bet you'll never see me booked at your local convention center giving a lecture on how to achieve all your life's ambitions and goals. Just motivating myself is hard enough task as it is. Unfortunately, I'm now facing the dilemma of lighting a fire under my 8 -year old mother, who is struggling to regain the same level of independence prior to a nasty spill she took in late January. Broken hips aren't fun for anyone. But when you're pushing 90 -- and not walking with a great amount of confidence as it is -- it's not a good situation.

Use 'em or lose 'em, the old saying goes. It has now been well over a month since mom returned home, and she's only journeyed out three times. Two times were appointments with her doctors; the other was an impromptu excursion to the ER, late one evening, after a blood test showed positive for blood clots. Fortunately, the sonogram contradicted the blood test -- no clots found. Good news, of course, but still it wasn't fun spending nearly three hours in the ER for nothing, then having to get her back up the front stairs at 1:00 a.m. The least they could have done was put her up for the night and given her a free breakfast. Just kidding -- sort of.

I'm at my wits end. Everything looked on course -- the staff was very pleased -- while she was recuperating in the skilled nursing care unit. At first, she was bound and determined to make a full recovery; now she's frustrated and tired. Well, I'm doing the best I can, honestly. Still, my motivational skills leave a lot to be desired.

"Would you like to try to take a ride today?"

"Errrrrr...I don't think so."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, not today."

"It would do you good...moving around and all."

"Maybe tomorrow."

"Ok."

Tony Robbins I ain't.

My girlfriend suggest I get a bit more stern, perhaps to the point of getting downright threatening. That's just not my style, I guess.

Sorry for employing a bit of dark humor, but that's just my style. It's how I deal with difficult, emotional and depressing situations. We all get old; it's just not particularly fun watching those you love give-up and slip away.

Sorry to hear your friend is

Sorry to hear your friend is not doing so well, Joseph. Shingles can be very nasty, indeed. I hope she pulls through this ok. Flowers and music are always uplifting. With Mother's Day approaching, that gives me some ideas. She is doing much better, now. She's averaging at least two trips out per week, and getting stronger. :)

No matter the age, rehab can be difficult

Anytime we must do things we simple do not want to do, it is difficult, and trying. Soycriada; very comforting, soothing, and truthful advice. Yea, Kjhack, you took the words right out of my thoughts. Vieda is not doing well up in Vancouver, WA. Aside from the broken hip, she's been suffering from Shingles for over a year. I can't believe she was never offered a Shingles shot last year. I think the idea of flowers and playing her some of her favorite music would get your mom pleased. It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. So much about motivation for

So much about motivation for the old. Sometimes these people just want to rest awhile. I sense you are fearful of having to look after an invalid. Give her time to heal do not push her she will get more frustrated.bring her flowers play some of the music she loves act as if every thing is OK.She will do what her body is capable of doing in time.

very glad

I'm very glad to hear that. Your mother has an amazing inner strength.

Yay! Good News kjhack!

That's good news. I hope your mom continues improving. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the thoughtful comments, everyone. You'll all be happy to hear that mom decided to venture out today and get her hair done. Everything went well; she's moving up and down the stairs much better than she expected. I think she's working through the malaise that had fallen over her since she got home from the hospital. :)

Being Around

At least you are are around your Mom. I know it means a lot to parents to have their children around during illness. You seem to be helping by caring and just being there. Chin up! Hope she gets over her mood soon! Here Is My Xomba Page Buy Video Games Online My profile

Re: Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

I think it's amazing that your mother has pulled through hip surgery at 87 years old with so few problems. And you deserve full credit for helping her through this. But has she received physical therapy since the operation? Also, did you ever find out why she tested positive for blood clots? Perhaps you could get a visiting nurse come out and see if your mother is (physically) up for taking a ride with you. Maybe she is still in pain but doesn't want to admit it. That might explain why she has given up. If all else fails, see if Tony Robbins himself can do any better. You know, books, DVDs. If not, then at least you will have someone else to blame. (Hee hee.) Good luck.

No, I chose my Words Badly!

No I chose my words badly! A little too perfunctory I guess... The Sun is Shining Here and I really hope it is with you Kjhack, by the way, "you really look like Salvador Dahli", by the way! Guess I am not the first person to tell you that! Alethea
