Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

It's a pretty safe bet you'll never see me booked at your local convention center giving a lecture on how to achieve all your life's ambitions and goals. Just motivating myself is hard enough task as it is. Unfortunately, I'm now facing the dilemma of lighting a fire under my 8 -year old mother, who is struggling to regain the same level of independence prior to a nasty spill she took in late January. Broken hips aren't fun for anyone. But when you're pushing 90 -- and not walking with a great amount of confidence as it is -- it's not a good situation.

Use 'em or lose 'em, the old saying goes. It has now been well over a month since mom returned home, and she's only journeyed out three times. Two times were appointments with her doctors; the other was an impromptu excursion to the ER, late one evening, after a blood test showed positive for blood clots. Fortunately, the sonogram contradicted the blood test -- no clots found. Good news, of course, but still it wasn't fun spending nearly three hours in the ER for nothing, then having to get her back up the front stairs at 1:00 a.m. The least they could have done was put her up for the night and given her a free breakfast. Just kidding -- sort of.

I'm at my wits end. Everything looked on course -- the staff was very pleased -- while she was recuperating in the skilled nursing care unit. At first, she was bound and determined to make a full recovery; now she's frustrated and tired. Well, I'm doing the best I can, honestly. Still, my motivational skills leave a lot to be desired.

"Would you like to try to take a ride today?"

"Errrrrr...I don't think so."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, not today."

"It would do you good...moving around and all."

"Maybe tomorrow."

"Ok."

Tony Robbins I ain't.

My girlfriend suggest I get a bit more stern, perhaps to the point of getting downright threatening. That's just not my style, I guess.

Sorry for employing a bit of dark humor, but that's just my style. It's how I deal with difficult, emotional and depressing situations. We all get old; it's just not particularly fun watching those you love give-up and slip away.

No worries

I didn't think that's what you were saying. Maybe I chose my words poorly.

Gosh Kjhack..

Goodness I am so sorry, the last thing I wanted you to think was that I was suggesting that you turned your back... I hope you got the gist of what I was saying though... Alethea

Well, turning my back is

Well, turning my back is certainly not an option since she is completely dependent on me for provisions -- and quite a number or tasks that need to be done. I understand what you're saying, though. If I stop pushing, she just might come around in her own time. As far as me being a good motivational speaker, I'm not sure I can agree with you on that. But thanks for the kind words, alethea. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

Sorry needed to say also..

Yes, I think you might make a cracking motivational speaker by the way, the first rule some would say is empathy, which is surely something you have... Hope she get's back on her feet very very soon and you enjoy that ride out... Alethea

I know this sounds strange...

In the past I have found that often when you try and help those in need they they feel they are somewhat "disabled" from their true self if they give in and ask for help. I adopted a strategy, (with some family members that will remain nameless) with whom I turned my back at the time, but for a reason. Painful as it was, I needed them to come to me and it seemed to have a positive effect. As reverse psycology might... In that the "unobtainable is always more desireable." I am not suggesting that you turn your back without a keen on eye on the situation but it does seem to work at times... Just a thought khjack... The Sun is shining and I hope it where you are too...

Rawnak, that's pretty much

Rawnak, that's pretty much the way I've been handling it. I definitely won't give up; I just figure at 87, she's entitled to do what she wants. Like I said, my girlfriend doesn't agree with me, though. She think I should be threatening her. :-S Thanks for the comments. :)

Women can be very moody

and old ones even more so...Just let her be, and indulge her and humor her...I am sure that at that age that's all she is really looking for, other than moral support, of course! What's important is that you don't give up on her...! Requires a lot of patience! All the best Kjhack...Hope you have a great easter! Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

That's a good idea, helenkw.

That's a good idea, helenkw. With the Easter weekend coming up, perhaps that will be a good opportunity to implement such a plan. Thanks for your concern and comments. :)

Less Stern, more crafty?

Why not book seats to a restaurant, and then tell her you are all going out, the restaurant is booked... making it more of a statement than a question is going to put lots of pressure on! Getting old must be hard, the fear of hurting yourself again, being a burden, being needy - I hope she is back on her feet soon. Check out my Xomba Homepage

Might be worth a try, taprial

It is true, we tend to come full circle in our declining years. Now I can actually relate to everyone who has kids. :) I'm sure this will turn around for her. Thanks for the thought. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator
