Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

Why I'll Never be a Motivational Speaker

It's a pretty safe bet you'll never see me booked at your local convention center giving a lecture on how to achieve all your life's ambitions and goals. Just motivating myself is hard enough task as it is. Unfortunately, I'm now facing the dilemma of lighting a fire under my 8 -year old mother, who is struggling to regain the same level of independence prior to a nasty spill she took in late January. Broken hips aren't fun for anyone. But when you're pushing 90 -- and not walking with a great amount of confidence as it is -- it's not a good situation.

Use 'em or lose 'em, the old saying goes. It has now been well over a month since mom returned home, and she's only journeyed out three times. Two times were appointments with her doctors; the other was an impromptu excursion to the ER, late one evening, after a blood test showed positive for blood clots. Fortunately, the sonogram contradicted the blood test -- no clots found. Good news, of course, but still it wasn't fun spending nearly three hours in the ER for nothing, then having to get her back up the front stairs at 1:00 a.m. The least they could have done was put her up for the night and given her a free breakfast. Just kidding -- sort of.

I'm at my wits end. Everything looked on course -- the staff was very pleased -- while she was recuperating in the skilled nursing care unit. At first, she was bound and determined to make a full recovery; now she's frustrated and tired. Well, I'm doing the best I can, honestly. Still, my motivational skills leave a lot to be desired.

"Would you like to try to take a ride today?"

"Errrrrr...I don't think so."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, not today."

"It would do you good...moving around and all."

"Maybe tomorrow."

"Ok."

Tony Robbins I ain't.

My girlfriend suggest I get a bit more stern, perhaps to the point of getting downright threatening. That's just not my style, I guess.

Sorry for employing a bit of dark humor, but that's just my style. It's how I deal with difficult, emotional and depressing situations. We all get old; it's just not particularly fun watching those you love give-up and slip away.

Yeah, Mia, if I suddenly

Yeah, Mia, if I suddenly went all Richard Simmons on her, I don't imagine that would go over particularly well. And she's probably be inclined to search for an alien pod of some sort. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator Free Chicken Wings

Old People = small kids

That's what they say about old people, they tend to become and behave like small kids. As small kids all of us hated those motivational lectures our teachers and elders gave, which in the end made us more determined to not do that thing. Try a little reverse psychology, give up. Old she may be, but your mother will jump at the chance of giving her son a lesson on how not to give up so easily. Hope she gets better soon. Bare Essentials

Oh Mia!

You made me laugh! I'm with you on that type of motivation though. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

getting older

I feel the same way. But could you imagine if you had said..."C'mon! Get up! You can do it! We've got spirit yes we do! Believe in yourself!" or something along those lines. I would punch you out myself at that point, ha ha. I prefer to be supportive in every way possible while I let mom/dad work through what they need to work through. Peace, Mia NW

And those may be the ones

Some might call being even

Some might call being even the least bit facetious while discussing such an issue as being "inappropriate", I think. Thanks for the kind words, MJ.

Humor is great medicine

No need to apologize, I wouldn't call it dark humor though. I would say you are shining a light on a dark situation. There is another old saying, "You can't help those who won't help themselves." Do not feel guilty or frustrated because you cannot motivate, sometimes people just decide for themselves that they "will not", no matter what we may try. A few months before my grandmother passed, my aunt asked her why she would not talk anymore. Her reply, "I've said everything I need to say." She was 92. It is tough and can be lonely doing what you are doing, but you are doing a wonderful thing, you are loving. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles!
