Why I'm Dreading the Movie Remake of Land of the Lost

Why I'm Dreading the Movie Remake of Land of the Lost

When I was about eight years old, Land of the Lost began broadcasting Saturday mornings right after Tarzan but right before American Bandstand. With this sort of lineup and DVRs non-existent, I didn’t look up from the television until it was time for lunch.

Land of the Lost was one messed up show and it creeped me out right from the opening credits! Here was Will, Holly and their dad panicked as their drifting raft got caught up in river rapids. Then, they death-plunged over a waterfall and ended up in a strange land. Pterodactyls flew overhead and Holly looked terrified. Since I was younger than Holly, I was super-terrified! The freaked-out family finally made it to land only to realize that the tremors they felt were not due to an earthquake, but were actually the footsteps of a gigantic tyrannosaurus rex, coming to feed upon them.

After running for their lives, they miraculously found a cave entrance and scooted safely inside. But T-rex made sure to chomp at them from the cave’s entrance, roaring with anger when he missed dinner. End of opening credits. Opening credits! What more could possibly happen to this family?

Although they never showed Will and Holly’s mom, in my young mind I could see her safely back home in her ranch-style home, wringing her hands and anxiously looking out the window for her family to come home. I imagined her crying at night and worried to death about the kids. I commiserated with the (imaginary) mom and with Holly as I couldn’t imagine being separated from my own mom at that age, knowing she would be worried sick.

And then along comes Chaka, a pre-pubescent Chewbacca-type creature who learned how to speak to the family and became their friend. I finally started to relax. The family always escaped T-rex and seemed to be learning the tricks of dino-land survival. I even laughed at my silliness of being caught up in the drama as it was obvious they were going to be alright. But then, something horrible happened to the Marshall family –

Sleestak!

The sleestak were dormant lizard people who would somehow only wake up when the family was trying to sneak past them. They ambled about zombie-style and made horrible hissing noises. Sometimes they would catch the kids in their web-like hands. Will and Holly would then have to fight them off and make another run for it out of the dark cave.

This was too much for me, I was done watching Land of the Lost. I purposely found something else to do during that ½ hour and then returned to the family room in time to watch Dick Clark. My older sister would make fun of me but I didn’t care. The sleestak were starting to show up in my nightmares. Once, I could have sworn that I saw a sleestak in the Bandstand crowd of kids, grooving to Stevie Wonder’s Sir Duke in white bell-bottoms and a flashy vest. I gasped! But the camera panned too quickly and I lost visual contact with the zombie-lizard. Did I imagine that…or maybe the sleestak were slowly infiltrating my non-dino world, looking for Will and Holly or any kid they could torture! MOM!!!!!!!!!!

Land of the Lost has now been remade in to a feature film starring Will Ferrell and Anna Friel, and will be in theaters this July to terrify a new generation of small kids. But this time, Chaka, T-rex and the sleestak will just have to help/harm the family without me because I’ve never really forgiven Mr. Marshall for taking his kids on an obviously unsafe rafting trip.

Great post Mia! I

Great post Mia! I understand your somewhat tongue in cheek reasons for not wanting to see this movie, but I think Will Ferrel is going to be hilarious in it. Mia check out my latest post about Xombie tv habits and let us know what your favorite tv shows are!

Wow! that was a great narration

although I never watched the show you are talking about..(Thank God! I don't think I would have enjoyed it one way or the other). I am not particularly fond of dinosaurs. Haha..Mia, You do have a way with words. Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

Agreed TylaMac

Claymation dinosaurs made the show what it was. Well, that and sleestak! Peace, Mia NW

I don't like re-makes either

After I saw the Grinch movie I vowed never again to see a remake of any of my favorite childhood TV shows. I think the campy "fakeness" of Land Of The Lost was a big part of its appeal. I'm sure since Will Ferrell will star it will have comic elements but I can't imagine that they'll use 70s style special effects. I may consider watching it when it makes it to cable. Maybe. Re-makes are usually

Re-makes are usually a disappointment to me. There is just something about the cheezy 70's shows that modern technology seems to ruin. Aaah, yes Mia, Chaka had a plastic face with a furry stuffed body. He was so cute! ; ) MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

Too Funny!

Sig-mund the Sea Monster and Johnny and Scott are friends! I almost forgot about him! Too funny! Can you imagine a remake though?

Sigmond The Sea Monster

I was much more of a Sigmond the Sea Monster fan. For some reason they batched these shows together with the Bugaloos and some bs space show. Land of the Lost just was uninteresting to me - too fake. But, this comedy movie has the potential - I'm awaiting Will to show his Anchorman comic genius again. Visit my homepage here

I didn't know Chaka dolls

existed! Thanks MJ and Ms. Sophie for your comments. You have a good memory for the details. I didn't watch enough to get the full story lines. I think the Will Ferrell version will be campy enough and these days, kids don't scare so easily anyway. Peace, Mia NW

Awww ...

Awww ... you poor kid. I was 10 at the time, and also afraid of the show, but couldn't show it because my brothers and my friends would have laughed at me. I remember the Sleestaks well. They were terrifying! Did you ever see the episodes where Will or Holly (usually Holly, I think) would enter the pylon? That was cool! Because inside of it was that tray with all the lights that controlled the pylon, and you knew that one of those lights had to be able to get them out of there (back home, that is). Though I never did see the final episode and find out if or how the family got back. Anyway, the pylon was controlled by a good Sleestak, which made it even scarier because you couldn't really tell the good Sleestak from the bad ones, and usually it was asleep when they entered the pylon, so you would have to wait until it woke up to see if it was the good one or one of the bad ones. I dread the remake, too. If you check out the old episodes, like on YouTube, you'll see just how cheesy the show really was. But when we were kids, we loved cheesy special effects! Now they will use computer-generated effects and kill it completely, I'm sure. Look what they did to Godzilla in the remake. At least in the original Godzilla movies, you could kind of feel sorry for the creature. But in the remake, it's all reptile and very scary. How are we supposed to explain to our kids how much we used to love (or hate) these shows when we were younger, when all Hollywood does is take out the originality and glitz it up? I hate remakes. Here's another thought, where are all the Bugs Bunny reruns? It's not fair that I have to buy all the episodes on video.

I loved Land of the Lost!

Sleestak and all, I was glued to the TV. Wow, what memories your post brought back! I wanted to find my own Chaka too! I remember asking for a Chaka doll for Christmas. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html
