Why I Will Never Be A Conventional Reviewer
posted August 10, 2008 - 1:20pmI see a lot of films and live theatre. I would like to write reviews for the productions I see. However, I have found that I do not view these events like a typical reviewer. My standards are simple: Don't bore me. Don't make me fall asleep. Touch me some way emotionally. Do these things and I'm a happy camper.
You would think that being actively involved in both film and theatre that I would approach a review with a critical eye. That I would want to comment on production values, editing, cinematography, lighting, sound, editing and acting. But honestly, unless I'm completely bored I will not notice these things (the exception being an extremely bad or repetitive performance).
So, here I am, wanting to share my views of the events I see and unable to do so in the "traditional" sense. I cannot write several paragraphs on a production when one or two sentences will suffice. I don't need to delve into the psychological depths of the writing to tell you whether a production is worth your money. It's simple. If I say "go see" then you should enjoy it. If I say "you have to see" then definately make an effort. If I say "I enjoyed it" and nothing else then perhaps you should think about it. If "it stunk" skip it.
