Why is race SO important here in America?

Why is race still so important in America? Why can't we get over it?
Sure, this country four hundred years ago was practically founded on the ideas of slavery and superiority over others.
We even fought a civil war primarily over those same issues.
But the civil rights movement is over 40 years old. We said, as Martin Luther King said, we wanted to be judged on our character, not on our skin color. Why then, is everything seen from the issue of race?
Can a white person even mention race? No. Take Governor Schwarzenegger, who had to aplogize for saying that Hispanics are "fiery" and "passionate"!! Can a hispanic say that in public? Of course he can. Can a black? Probably.

Aren't we all God's creation? One humanity? One people? If we look down from space, we see one planet, with no boundaries separating country from country, skin color from skin color. This is all man made - the ideas of nationality and race, because it is all superfical. Heart to heart, we are human beings, part of the same species, wanting the same things, needing the same things.

We are more alike than we are different!!!!

perfect example -

basically this sort of thing is exactly what causes "race" to be such an issue.

Why can't we get past race?

erby123 Well, also, people use it as a politic football. With so many immigrants, black "LEADERS" don't want THEIR issues surpassed by the millions of immigrants who are now a part of our country. the NAACP, to me, is of little use unless they are trying to start initiatives for education FOR ALL, health care FOR ALL, etc. They always want everything for blacks.

Yes, we are more alike than

Yes, we are more alike than we are different in many ways.I think that many people just cannot pass up the opportunity of taking advantage of the situation and as long as we allow it to be a situation ,there will be people using it for all they can use it for. Seriously, how many decades have to pass before we get beyond the anger for mistakes people have made? People never hesitate to tell one another to stop living in the past when a person dwells on the past.Maybe if we could live in the present, find a way to accept that the mistakes cannot be reversed, the damage has been done. Why cause endless damage due to mistakes made in the past. It doesn't matter how sorry anyone might feel,we still cannot change what has already taken place but we do have some control over the future. The mindset as a whole has to change in order for any real change to take place. The only way that mindset is possible is through willingness to forgive- that is a lot to ask in this world today -

Yes, we are more alike

- sorry about the double entry- xomba hiccuped or something - lol

Arnold could have said Nebraskans are sluggish and vapid. He could have said Sacramentoans are hot-headed and narrow-minded (but, of course, he'd never let that one slip). He could have said a lot of different stereotypes, but the occasion called for saying Hispanics are fiery and passionate. At least he was being specific with his generalization.
