Why McCain Won, by Newsweek's Jonathan Alter

The conventional wisdom is that Barack Obama has the 2008 election all but won, but there are a number of scenarios that could give John McCain the victory. Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter examines a number of factors that could enable McCain to win, ranging from lower than expected turnout of young voters to not winning enough of the Jewish vote to key states like Ohio and Florida swinging to McCain.

Obfuscation and confusion

Yeah, those'll all work! There have been all kinds of tricks, including something along the lines of contacting legal immigrants and implying that they will be deported if they vote. This is a big part of why I'm not following the election news this final week: in the last days before voting the entire closet of dirty tricks will be emptied in an attempt to win.

Well, people might catch on to that since it was already done in 2004. Besides, it wouldn't be 'mavericky' enough for a fighter jock who likes to go his own way.

The tried-and-true Republican tactic, even going back to the 20th century, is suppressing the Democratic vote. By sowing seeds of confusion within the traditional Democratic strongholds, they hope to keep those voters at home and minimize support for Barack Obama. McCain has also been employing the same Rovian strategists in North Carolina that Bush used in 2000 to spread lies about McCain (alleging John sired a black baby) in South Carolina. McCain cannot win on the issues. He must keep Obama voters at home by lies, innuendo, or confusing the issues. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
