Why Is Sand Bad For Leopard Geckos?

As cruel as the saying goes have you ever heard the expression curiosity killed the cat? In this case although it would be the gecko.

Most owners of leopard geckos know that Leos like to taste everything they cross to properly identify and inspect their surroundings. Even if they have crossed the same things over and over for years they will still act as though it's the first time they have ever encountered it.

Now when you think about sand, what is the first thing sand does when wet? It clumps right? Well now imagine a gecko licking a tiny bit of sand many times throughout the day. Maybe, you don't even notice it being geckos are so discrete and quiet.

Now imagine that each bit of sand is now building up inside your gecko, a tiny bit more, and a tiny bit more. Sometimes, and yes it's fairly common, your gecko will have build up such a large clump within itself that the ....
