Why won't you hire me?

Why won't you hire me?

I am $90,000 in debt from being in college for seven years. I am currently unemployed. I have two degrees. Why isn't anyone calling me?

I've been on CareerBuilder, Monster, and SimplyHired, searching for a job as a data entry clerk because I still have no idea where I want to go with my writing career. And I haven't heard from any companies. Most of the places I've applied to don't even list their contact information so there's no way I can call to check the status of my resume.

I have loads of administrative experience--you would think I'd be getting tons of phone calls.

Maybe I'm overqualified. Maybe people don't care about college degrees anymore.

I have a friend who is a manager of the electronics department in Walmart. He never attended college. He makes $55,000+ a year.

It doesn't make sense! Why did I waste seven years of my life? I probably would have been better off working at McDonald's right after high school.

I have four credit card bills and a cell phone bill which I did not pay this month. I'm completely broke and I had to close my bank account because they kept charging me money for not having enough money. In November, I'll have to start paying back my loans--at $600 a month.

The job market is supposedly high for college graduates this year. But can someone please tell me: where are the jobs?

Don't be upset, because

Don't be upset, because you're not the only one. I graduated college in 2004 and I can't find a decent job. I am tired of fast food jobs and I feel that I should be making $17-$18 hour by now. I feel the exact same way like I went to college for nothing.

Careers- Where are the jobs?

I can identify with you on why aren't employers hiring you. My situation is similar because I went to College and spent at least 2 years trying to earn a degree. However, it is tough because I have been on 3 interviews in the past 4 months and no one did not respond. Although I have a degree, I do lack some experience, but I can learn anything they want me to learn, I just have the drive to learn it and do it! It does not make sense to me as well. I was applying for jobs such as receptionist, administrative assistants, and whatever I can to get through the door. It seem like the only jobs I was able to receive was in education and that is what I am doing right now, but it was not my goal after graduation. The jobs are out there, but it is tough because employers are looking for certain people and skills for their company, but how could we know if they don't tell us specifically? Keep trying, keep going, I encourage you not to give up completely. I am working part time and I still want better. I have bills to pay, which I cannot afford because I found it difficult in the past 3 years to land a job that is going to pay me enough for my living expenses. It is overwhelming sometimes. I know exactly what you are facing and it is not a small hurdle, it is unpredictable to tell what will happen next. Do you have training centers or employment offices in your community? Here are some suggestions for you to consider if you want. 1. Speak to friends or relatives about how did they land their jobs. 2. Look in the newspapers and go for the jobs that are close to your qualities and skills. 3. Revise your resume or go to a career center to work one on one with a specialist 4. Go to different websites and see what happens 5. Revisit your college campus and see a career services rep. Ask for information on career fairs, job bullentins, and job development courses if available 6. Do not give up, do not give up, you are born to make it. 7. After you have tried all of these steps or more, brainstorm and find a way to get more information you never knew, keep going, I know it's tough, I am going through the same things and I find it hard too. 8. Let's share our stories and if we can share information with each other, let's do it in order to help each other.

Get in line

Your not the only one, there are hundreds of others in your same boat. Owing big bucks on school loans, my husband is out of forebearances and defferals. Works less than 8 days a month at 5 different school districts as a sub teacher has been subbing for 11 years and they won't hire him. He has added endorsements and clock hours and now he is nearing 60. Several have told him. It is your age. Not those hiring but those who have been there or retired teachers. He can paper our house walls with applications for jobs and thank your for your interest we have hired someone more qualified. Tell me how is a young 23 year woman just graduated from college more qualified? She isn't but they can hire her for $15,000-$20,000 less a year. We had to file bankruptcy for the first time in 36 years of marriage last year and could not take of my husbands financial aide loans. Due to stupid laws. They went from his owing $22,000 to now with interest due to forebearance and defferals to $38,000 and we will never pay them off. We cannot afford $590 a month. Our income is $1024.00 a month and our mortgage is $450. Add auto insurance, utilites, gas and other needs, we are in the red every month. Daughter helps with food, and son pays for phone and internet. I babysit for them and home school their kids. So we survive and make do and do without. Buy clothes in yard sales and thrift stores and go to farmer's market and food banks. Do without dental unless it is emergency. Do without medical unless emergency, we don't have health insurance or life insurance, or dental insurance. Do without a lot of things but we get buy and we have a lot of love and laughter anyway. Gather wild food, berries, mushrooms, and son goes fishing and hunting. We grow a garden. You learn to get by. Church helps a lot too. God has never yet let us down, the power of prayer is an awesome thing.
