Why Writers Need to Read

Why Writers Need to Read

Since I seem to be writing to a target audience of newer writers, let me offer another piece of advice to budding article writers, especially those for whom English is not a primary language.

Read.

Yes, read. As in, read books. Read magazines. Read articles. Read poems. Read, read, read.

Why do I exhort and encourage you to read? From my own experience, seeing language in its many forms trains your brain to see new vocabulary words in proper context and to see how the mosaic of the English language can be put together beautifully.

Increasing your vocabulary and learning to put together complete and coherent sentences will add tools to your toolbox. Like the saying goes, if all you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail. If you are limiting the number and type of tools in your toolbox, you are limiting your options to creatively express what is in your heart.

As an exercise to increase your knowledge and understanding, as soon as you finish that book or magazine article, try to put what you believe the author was saying into your own words to apply that knowledge you have just gained.

Reading for pleasure is one of the best ways for you to become a better writer.

Read to learn to write

Great article as usual jdub! I have learned so much with my reading habits, not just spelling and punctuation, but about trees, birds, what types of trees grow where... Romance books are very descriptive! lol MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

On that note, MJ

You know the book is gooooood when you are doing some Royal Reading (um, on the "throne") and you realize that both of your legs are asleep. LMAO! CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

Consuming Time with Reading

LOL Helen!! I do that myself, it is so easy for me to get wrapped up reading all the articles that I don't write one myself. I have always been a reader though. I don't remember a time when I didn't lock myself in my bedroom, have a book in the bathroom, (Oops, TMI?)or on the coffee table! MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! I could not agree more with

I could not agree more with this article big thumbs up lol

Golden Retrivers are common guide dogs. in the States

I've seen lots of German Shepards as guide dogs, but the trend seems to be Golden Retrievers, at least around this area. I used to have a roommate who had one that failed out of guide dog school because it was too skittish around loud noises. Wonderful dog and was failed out near the end of the school, so the dog had nearly all the training required and would have done well had it not been for that behavior issue. You are quite right, ofcourse..

Dogs in the UK are not "optically challenged" but the known expression is "blind dogs." otherwise, "guide dogs" They are beautiful animals, not sure if you have Labradors or Retrievers in the US. I also enjoy the differences in translation, there is a really good film, I believe called lost in translation, or am I thinking of a book?

Blind dogs?

We call them most typically "seeing eye dogs" here in the States. Is the advert stating that the dogs are optically-challenged themselves or are they there to assist persons who are optically-challenged? I am fascinated by languages, particularly English (well, in all fairness, I can only lay claim to speaking English, Spanish, and a tiny bit of German) and love to see how words and sentences interconnect. I believe English is the hardest to learn of the world's languages because so many of the rules can be contradicted during the course of normal conversation. Thanks for your comment! Read, read and read..

Couldn't agree with you more Helen. You (not You but generally) have to understand it to talk about it! I have known lots of people who are dyslexic and they have been truly talented people creatively and otherwise.

Blind dogs..

I read an article this evening which promoted a new airline carrier which intends to carry pets, (solo) by air. There was an interesting piece accompagnying which said that "blind dogs" were allowed. Do Dogs have human rights and contact lenses? A blind dog is a blind dog but so often in the uk they are referred to as such but should be referred to as "Guide Dogs" Just a thought... Great piece Jdub, as ever, Alethea
