Why You Should Use Safety Precautions When Working With Solar Power Equipment
posted April 23, 2008 - 7:44pmSolar power is a relatively safe source of energy. Yet, there are certain precautions that need to be taken when dealing with the components of the system. Particularly, the batteries and solar panels require a certain degree of concern.
When you are working around the batteries of your solar power system, it is best to make sure that someone can hear you if you call for help. You could need another person for a variety of reasons.
Just like car batteries, the batteries for a solar power system contain battery acid. If you should get some on your skin, in your eyes, or even on your clothes, it is imperative to get it off immediately.
Having soap and water available will help to clean the battery acid off of you. If you get it on your clothes, take them off before it eats through to your skin. For your eyes, you need running water to flood your eyes, but that is not enough. You need to get to a doctor or medical clinic right away.
It is never wise to smoke or allow any bit of fire to drop near a battery. Also, metal tools may cause a spark, which can lead to an explosion. You should always make sure that, if you have a hybrid system, your backup generator is disabled so that it does not start while you are working on the battery.
You should never wear metal jewelry or watches when you are around the battery. A short circuit can produce high enough current to weld the metal to other metal. This would cause you intense burns.
There are also precautions you should take when you work on solar panels. First, you should cover up the outward side of the panels so that sunlight cannot get to them. This keeps them from producing electricity while you are working.
You have to be careful what you touch when you are installing solar panels. It is unsafe to touch the terminals if they are exposed to light. You should also be equipped with insulated tools to use for the operation.
As any electrician will explain, you do not work on solar panels (which produce electricity) in the rain. You should also be aware that sparks may be present when you work with the panels. Do not have any flammable gases around.
If you leave a solar panel unsecured, it can fall and break. Not only will you lose a once perfectly good solar panel, but you will have the hazard of broken glass as well. This is only one reason children should never be allowed to play around where solar panels are being installed.
The safety measures needed for solar power are mainly for installation and maintenance. Solar power is still very safe in comparison to most other forms of energy. It only takes a few precautions and a little know-how to keep the project running smoothly with no accidents to you or anyone else. It is so easy that most people can do it with little or no help.
