Widgetbox: Putting the Web in World Wide Web

Widgetbox: Putting the Web in World Wide Web

As writers, we understand that we need people to read our articles and we work hard to make sure that we get traffic. We put together well-written, informative articles that are optimized for the search engines. We post our articles where other people post articles. We grab our lucky rabbit's foot (although lucky for us and not so much for the rabbit) and pray to the deity of our choice for people to notice our article.

What happens when that is not enough?

I am a firm believer that we can never have too many writing tools in our toolbox. One of my personal favorites is Widgetbox. Widgetbox allows you to create a personal HTML banner of your blog's feed and the ten most recent articles you've written. The banner at the bottom of this article is my personal Xomba Widgetbox.

The first step is getting the URL address for your feed. Once you have it, head on over to Widgetbox and type that URL into the box at the top of the screen. Once the website can find your address (takes a few seconds), it will begin to walk you through the process of designing your own banner. The banner is free, so you should click out of anything that says you need to do a trial of their paid services.

Personally, I prefer the black "skin" cover because I happen to post it places that have a white background. I also prefer to use my photo as the avatar because it has been proven that a photo likeness connects you psychologically to your readers.

Once you've decided on your final Widgetbox, you can simply get the code. I find it best to open up Notepad on your computer, cut-and-paste the code from Widgetbox onto a Notepad page, then save that page to your desktop. That way, you will always have quick access to the code to cut-and-paste into the articles you write.

(For you Xomba users, this is how you find your feed address. First, click on "View My Profile". On your profile page, move your mouse cursor over your Xomblurbs link. In the lower left of your browser window, you will see a URL with a four or five digit number in it. That number is your Xomba user number. Your feed address will be http://www.xomba/com/xombyte/XXXXX/feed, where the "XXXXX" is your user number. Just plug that whole link into the box at Widgetbox.)

If you have a personal blog, you can create a banner for that blog's feed, too. Or you can post a Widgetbox banner for your, say, Xombytes, to your personal blog.

The ultimate goal is to weave a web between the article people may have found through the search engines with your other articles and drive traffic to them, too.

Widgetbox is an excellent tool for putting the web in world wide web.

The Widgetbox is a bit dressier

While I do also like the Feedburner banner for its compact tidiness, I believe the Widgetbox is the better choice for inclusion in the article's body because it is dressier and I daresay more professional-looking. Once the new Xomba site is live, I might reassess, but this is what works for me right now. Thanks for your comment! CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

Inspired

Might upgrade to a widget box, like the feedburner thing for comments though because its quite small.

Now Xomblurb-Feed Now, but Only Abmox Knows ... @jdubhub-Wdzzz

Nick said something like 'There'll be feeds for everything in the redesign.' And I wouldn't lump Xomblurbs in with the term 'social bookmarks' (whether the admin themselves do so in the descriptions or do not), I would rather think of them as 'outsourced ice-breakers.' ---Give Your Opinion Too!, & Google MIGHT find some extra money for you like they do for My Latest Work!

Follow up for Wdzzz

For the actual feed address, I'm not sure why yours turned out. I just went back to Widgetbox.com and manually typed mine in http://www.xomba.com/xombyte/5376/feed and it was accepted. Even when I signed into my account there, my current banner uses the same URL. Strange. Thanks for the heads up. For Xomblurbs, since they are social bookmarks, there is no "feed" technically. I just tried plugging in "xomblurb" where "xombyte" is in the feed URL and it was rejected. This is probably something set up at Xomba's end. I know you do more Xomblurbs for the coupons and deals, but I don't know of anything that works as far as banner yet. Maybe you could use Widgetbox and Feedburner to drive traffic to your Xombytes, which would generate more traffic for your Xomblurbs. Just a thought. On that last note, once the new site upgrade is in place, I believe Nick said we'd have a change to our user profile page or something to that effect. You might be able to lay things out a little differently. Your signature block is capped as to how many characters you can put in there. It doesn't matter whether those characters are HTML code or text. That's why I just have one line with my referral link after my Feedburner banner and also why I don't have a Widgetbox for my signature block: the code for Widgetbox is twice as long as Feedburner's. If you want to use Feedburner, you will have to eliminate most of what you would normally put in there. Hope this helps! CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

jdubhub..Thank you and Question..

Thank you for the article. It helped me to actually set up a widget for the first time. The only thing I found in this article though is the url you gave for xomba users did not work. After playing around with it for awhile I realized that url has a / where it should have a .(period) At least that is how it worked for me and Im not a pro at such things. When I changed this it worked like a charm. I also have a question. Is there any way to set up a widget for our Xomblurbs? I havent been able to figure that out. If there is could you write an article on that for us? (smile). Also, I was wondering... the code for the feedburner I added it to my profile but every time I make a comment at least half the code is cut off and it wont automatically add to the comment. Not sure what I am doing wrong on that one. I do add the feedburner now but I add it from a notepad by cut and paste. Any suggestions on why it wont stay whole and complete in my profile. Sure do appreciate you and your help. Thanks again for all your help and great article. +1 For more articles by this author click here

You won't regret it

I would prefer to use Widgetbox for my signature, too, but the HTML code is too long to keep it in my profile full-time. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

Widget Box? Yea, much better than the "feedburner..."

I thank you for the help you gave me on how to set up a feedburner display, but, now, I need this one. And, yes, I, too, think the black background is best... thanks for the heads-up on this better wheel... ________________________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995

It should be done in a new tab or page, Chris

I thought that it would be something similar to Feedburner and just have an index page, but my test runs of Widgetbox show that it will give you the link for your to paste into a new tab or window on your browser. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

JDub, I set up one of these

JDub, I set up one of these feeds a while ago, but haven't pasted it in my posts for a while. For some reason when I try to click through to your other article titles, it won't send me to the link. Could be something on my end, but thought I would let you know.
