Wii Gaming for the Hardcore Gamer.

Wii Gaming for the Hardcore Gamer.

What Wii games to get and why! Written from the perspective of someone who's been playing games for 30 years and is NOT a nintendo fanboy.

OK so you got a Wii, you've played Wii Sports with your mates a few times and you're saying to yourself, now what?

There are difficult and complex wii gaming experiences out there, it's not all casual gaming.

Gun Games
YES - this is where the wii really shines, once you replaced your old CRT TV (surely you've done that by now!) all of your gun games stopped working and gun games are really good fun! Finally I can play gun games on my plasma, they work due to the pointing function of the Wiimote.

Yes it is worth getting a Wii zapper, it makes it much easier to aim and control everything. Some of the third party plastic ones are OK but it's more of a hit and miss affair if you take that option.

My favourite Gun Games are:

House of the Dead 2 and 3 - A bit long in the tooth now and pretty simple but still one of the best old school gun game experiences out there.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles - Good fun and quite a long and involved game, gets very hard towards the end and has other points of interest like secret missions and gun upgrades.

Ghost Squad - A pretty short game when you first play it but it does have lots of unlockables including uniforms, guns and other paths within missions. Is more complex and enjoyable than it first appears.

Shorter Quick Play style games
I put most puzzlers and quick action games in this category, my favourites are:

Boom Blox - has quite a few styles of play, from throwing bowling balls at stacked up blocks, shooting invading animals and pulling blocks out of teetering stacks. Lots of good fun multi player modes. One caution, this game is a poster child for Wii shoulder - you WILL hurt yourself if you play for too long.

Super Mario Galaxy - OK it's REALLY kiddy, just ignore that and there's a lot of fun to be had. Starts of very easy but trust me there's some true tear your hair out platform levels in here if you keep playing. All the references to other games, genres, etc are good fun too. I found the most enjoyment from playing a few levels and then stopping and playing something else, if you play it for hours on end it does get boring and you can feel like you're completing it for completions sake.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl - could be here or under deeper games depending on how you get into your fighters. I tend to play them for short periods of time on my own or else I get bored. Can certainly chew through the time multiplayer if you have friends over though. Copped a lot of flak for it's online multiplayer but I enjoyed it for a quick bash - select online, select quick brawl and a few seconds later you're playing online! Interactive stages, characters from lots of other franchises, everyone from my nieces (7 and 10) to my mates enjoys playing it.

Longer style games
This is where I put things that I sat down and played for more than four hours straight - involving deep gameplay that really chews through the time! My favourites are:

Resident Evil 4 - If you liked any resident evil game then this is a MUST, lots to do, secrets to find, extra missions and game styles (mercenaries mode!) and instead of the lame PS1/2/GC aiming system we all grew to know and hate you just point and shoot! If you want it to be difficult though you really should be playing on hard, the aiming function makes it too easy otherwise

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - OK first my guilty secret - I haven't played any of the other metroid games (aside from on the GBA) I know some people are screaming at the monitor and ignoring me from now on. But hey we had computers (Vic20,C64, Amiga) rather than consoles. OK now that's out of the way - this is a great game. Fun boss fights, interesting environments and power ups, unlockables, etc. Once again if you want a challenge play it on hard, the aiming can simplify some fights. After I finished this I lent it to a guy at work and he's been cursing me ever since as it's taken up all his spare time.

No More Heroes - A masterpiece of death and destruction. Just buy it and play it.

De Blob - I know what you're saying, this game doesn't belong in this section but for me it does. I spent hours and hours at a time playing this thing! Funny cutscenes, funnier unlockable videos, cool funky music and strangely compelling. Best of all you can pick it up quite cheap if you shop around (like I didn't!).

There's lots more decent Wii games out there, try sites like metacritic and gamerankings and look for their top 10 and check out the reviews.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment - much appreciated. Any other comments about writing style, etc appreciated. I've been meaning to start writing stuff like this for years but never got around to it. BTW the BBCode formatting stuff isn't working for me today... Great Article!

My personal favorite Wii games are Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Smash Bros. Plus I still think Wii sports is lots of fun.
