Will We Back to Banning "Made in China"?
posted August 2, 2007 - 11:52amMy mind goes back to a high school history class, where the teacher was talking about a time when we once banned the labels marked, "Made in China". If I remember correctly, the reasons behind the boycotts were war and political. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Today, it seems
like we might be returning to a ban on labels marked "Made in China," but for different reasons. Most recently, there has been a toy recall of Fisher-Price toys that were made (or sent over here, I'm still not sure of the exact details) from May to August. This has been the largest toy recall that Mattel has made since 1998. Apparently, there has been lead found in the plastics of such beloved character toys that don Dora, Diego, Big Bird and Elmo.
Not too long ago (within the past season), there was another recall of a product stemming from China. Remember the pet food recalls? Apparently, a lot of pet food coming over from China was contaminated with Wheat Gluten.
Two of our most treasured loves have been threatened from products coming out of China: our pets and our children. Will boycotting Chinese products do us any good? I don't know. This just makes me wonder. I think it's just the vendors involved. I guess more news will only tell us the truth. Would buying more products from our own country decrease the chances of these recalls? Of course, not everything in every product made in the USA is actually made in the USA. Is it the vendor, the country, both? Hmm...
