Woman Who's Had HIV For 10+ Years, May Hold The Key To Finding a Vaccine For AIDS
posted August 13, 2008 - 7:58pmA woman, who's identity is being withheld, for privacy purposes, has had HIV for at least 10 years. She acquired the disease from her husband, who was an intravenous drug user at the time. Test confirm that they both have the same strain of virus.
The difference between them is that he requires treatment to keep the virus at bay, and prevent it from blooming into full-blown AIDS for as long as possible. She, on the other hand, is called an 'elite suppressor'. Her body has been keeping the virus at bay, fighting it effectively since she got it. Her body seems to have built up an immunity of sorts.
Scientists are currently trying to use her immune cells to come up with a vaccine that could be used to treat people with the virus who are not 'elite suppressors'. Hopefully, at the very least, this research could provide valuable insight into the virus, and how best to combat it. That information could one day lead to a cure for humanities most deadly virus (up to this point, at any rate).
