Women In History
posted September 10, 2009 - 11:34amWomen's history. Anyone ever hear about it?
Well, let me tell you about it.
To this day, women's history is not taught in schools as extensively as it should be. The historical achievements of men continue to predominate academic study except for the month of March which is National Women's History month.
Even at the collegiate level, with the exception of Women's Studies, women's history continues to be ignored for the most part.
I have been researching women's history and women in history for the better part of two years now. I am still conducting my research. Amazingly, almost on a daily basis more and more women's historical achievements are brought to light.
For instance, Mary Anderson invented windshield wipers and had them patented in the year 1903. This was a number of years before the first car rolled off the assembly line. A year ago when I initially researched Anderson's name, there was scant information on her. Now there is an article on wikipedia.org about Mary Anderson and how she designed and patented windshield wipers.
Anderson didn't have much success marketing the windshield wipers at the time she patented them. Ironically, when her patent ran out is when car manufacturers made windshield wipers standard equipment.
Yet they made a movie about a guy who invented the intermittent windshield wipers.
I have come across, literally, thousands of women's lives and achievements which would make for good Hollywood fodder.
I don't know about anyone else, but the advancement and education of society about women's achievements throughout history is a very important subject to me. Which is why I write women's historical biographies at www.suite101.com. So far, I have written about Jacqueline Cochran, Senda Berenson, Ida Lewis, Sybil Ludington, Lana Turner and Bette Nesmith Graham (Michael Nesmith of The Monkees fame's mom). (There are also direct links to each biography on my website.)
So, let's hear it for Women's History, shall we?
