The World is Burning, But We'd Rather See Cute Pictures of Obama's Daughters
posted January 5, 2009 - 5:19pmOne of the hot searches at this moment is obama girls school. President-elect Obama has moved his transition team to Washington in order to be closer to his two young daughters as they begin the new semester at a new educational facilities. Of course, you can find the name of this institution anywhere on the net -- and no shortage of fluff news pieces babbling on about it. What passes as "newsworthy" never ceases to amaze me. But I've become used to the fact that Americans seem to thrive on a steady diet of mind numbingly nauseating -- and absolutely trivial -- news reporting. The media frenzy when Bristol Palin gave birth didn't surprise me one bit. What did surprise me was when news outlets outside the U.S. presented the story to their readers -- the BBC, for one. Unfortunately, this fascination with non-news items is growing rampantly throughout the rest of the World, it appears.
I certainly don't envy Obama's daughters as they are stalked by fluff news vultures. Obama has expressed wishes to keep his children out of the scrutiny of the media as much as possible. He doesn't actually help matters, however, when he alows his transition team to release photos of Malia and Sasha preparing to shuffle off to school. Three photos of the youngsters were released on Flickr, the photo sharing site.
People are still dying in two unfinished wars in the Middle East. But we're still more likely to be bombarded with the bubble headed antics of a Britney Spears than we are the latest deaths in Iraq or Afghanistan. With untold bloodshed occurring at this moment in Gaza, it seems unconscionable that CNN would broadcast an Hour of Larry King Live to listen to idiots discuss whether or not alien spacecrafts have permeated our atmosphere. Sheer madness.
I'm sure if extra terrestrials have visited our planet, they'd make a hasty retreat, never to return, after one good glimpse at our entire, mindless culture. And they most certainly would scratch their heads in amazement as tuned out Xombies discuss the latest hot reality show while our world is engulfed in a massive conflagration. They just might be tempted to sabotage any future technology we might develop that would enable us to take our disease to another world. I would hardly blame them.
