World of Warcraft, On-Line Gaming, a Family Adventure.
posted February 9, 2007 - 3:05pmRole Playing, Strategy Games, Dungeons and Dragons Games have come a long way. Started many years ago as board and dice games, with the Dungeon Master, (DM) hidden behind his DM board directing the flow of the game. They then graduated to computers based games and developed into today’s on-line games or internet games. With online gaming, you could be playing with individuals from any part of the world. With the "World of Warcraft" and the “World of Warcraft, the Burning Crusade” we can now take that one-step further and bring it closer to home.
Many years ago, I played Dungeons and Dragons, (D&D) and Forgotten Realms roll playing games. Thought it was a wonderful game, as long as the DM wasn’t being vindictive. Get a bad DM; it was not much fun. Years later, came “The Forgotten Realms Eye of the Beholder” on computer. I played the game with my son. I would move the characters and he would sit on my lap and hit the fire key when monsters showed up. Worked well, up until the firing stopped and he was asleep on my shoulder.
Several advances have since occurred and we now have on-line gaming over the internet. My son has played most of them and I was not impressed, until today. He now plays the World of Warcraft and its expansion the World of Warcraft the Burning Crusade. The characters and monster types are very similar to the old style characters. I became interested, watched him play, and even joked if I could hit the fire key as we did years ago. I recently needed and purchased a second computer and my son loaded the required programs. He is much older now and is the new computer guru. He also loaded the World of WarCraft. When asked why, he again reminded me, when we use to play together and he pushed the fire key. Since we had two computers he wanted me to give it a try.
I did and have been hooked ever since. World of WarCraft is a great game. We play our own characters and they interact together in the on-line internet gaming world. He has the more advanced characters and experience and relishes being in the lead, helping dear old dad get around. However, I still maintain control of when its time quite the game, we do have to sleep. We have come a long way from when he would sit on my lap and hit the fire key. It has actually turned into a family adventure and a common point of interest. Recently, I found a person I work with also plays World of Warcraft and his family plays the game as family activity as well.
If you have more then one computer, mom, dad, brother or sister, give World of Warcraft a try.
